update: rigid reamer holder

This is a whole lotta work to gain pretty much nothing in the end. I'm another in agreement that once the hole is bored in the tapered endmill holder, getting it to repeat is like trying to win the PowerBall. It will most likely be close enough that it will work no matter what. I've been using a JGS floating holder for years and it makes a true, tight round hole in the end.

Not arguing for/against but an earlier video, he was using JGS floating holder.

Later using a Gre-tan reamer holder

Here is Bruce Thom talking about the rigid holder.

Ever used a carbide chamber reamer?
I've used plenty of reamers, and if chatter is the problem, it's caused by the same things that make any tool chatter. Too high of a speed, too little of a depth of cut, and too low of a feed rate. Carbide tools also have their own built in problems, namely the shallow relief angle. It's made that way to keep the brittle cutting edge from easily chipping, but on boring bars and reamers, it can be difficult to get enough clearance behind the cutting edge to keep it from rubbing.

I get why people spend the money on a carbide reamer, but most would be better off with a tool steel one instead. A reamer, just like any other tool, is meant to cut material away. Not rub it away. Super slow feeds and ultra light cuts are great at dulling tools. The only saving grace in that is that a dull tool will be less prone to chatter.

I watched both of the videos with Bruce Thom last night and was very inspired with the way he got started, It reminded me of John Moses Browning and how he got his start. I have been to the Museum twice and it was very inspiring, Time will tell with Bruce, I hope he goes on to invent bigger and better things like John Browning did. It would take a lot more inventions and innovation to get close to John Browning, But none the less Bruce is a Master Machinist that deserves respect!

Yes agreed. Bruce and Daryl are amazing machinists. The guns that Bruce made at such a young age are incredible. I have a couple of BATs and like them a lot. Actions were built 5 yrs apart an have about .0002 headspace difference between 2 actions and 2 bolts swapped between.

I don't know if it's been mentioned but Bruce completely rebuilt that machine. In such instance, he can make sure it is true in all axis and the quill travel on the tailstock can be made to run true. I don't think most peoples lathes fall into the same category as the specific machine he shows in that video.

It's been mentioned in every other comment.

All advertising is paid one way or another. I was shocked to learn 40 years ago that a company spent more money on advertising than was spent on all manufacturing costs. So it's evident that it works. Ultimate reloader now has an Ultimate rifle making business taking orders. He'll continue to make more money making Youtube videos than he'll ever make off of building rifles.

Guys making trick shots with basketballs and earning $20-25 million per year. Look up dude perfect.

Gotta do something with all of the "product showcase" rifles he's building. I'm not throwing shade... I dont care for 99 percent of his channel, I find some value in the nuggets of things he shows but doesn't talk about, but he's built a good business.

I do think there is a difference between a product review by someone who bought it on his own VS someone who was given it and paid on top of that. I have no problems with any of it so long as the consumer knows what he's being fed. With these type of videos, they should start with the deal. I bought everything or I am charging for this. I think thats fair.

100% - There are some trustworthy people out there that will say who's paying them and still say if it's not great (Clough42 is a great example).

My previous comment was more a rag on UR because he used to be a decent "how to do things" channel... and at some point it totally turned into an advertising channel.

F Class John does that and I think he gives his honest opinion on the products he reviews. He is however a bit of a gadget junkie:). When watching the UR channel lately I keep waiting to hear” but wait, there’s more!”;)
