Update From SMT

For your amazement and amusement,

I received an (e)mail from Silver Mountain Targets today.

IMO, it is about time the NRA took a decision on an electronic target system.

The write up didn't mention approval if e-targets were approved for other matches such as regional and so on. Perhaps making such a assumption is premature.

Yeah. With this move, NRA has, by default, approved SMT targets.
If the NRA hasn't actually gone through a certification process, it will be interesting to see what other etarget suppliers have to say.

I saw this too. Surprised it took this long to get posted. Change the title to "E targets at NRA Nationals" and it would have 500 posts by now :D

I think it's good for the sport. Purists will disagree. I would tell them to use rifles and ammo that were used 20 years ago then. You know, give up high BC bullets, seating bullets with force curve sorting, auto trickle loading to single kernel precision in seconds, etc. Others will use it as an excuse for their poor performance and will never be satisfied.

If a pro golfer playing for millions can deal with the occasional fairway divot or sprinkler head deflection I can handle e targets.

You're the winner Bob. Dumbest comment I've ever read regarding E targets. Build a target that is accurate as equipment used. We all know that will never happen.
A) This was a preemptive strike toward those that think pulling targets is some rite of passage to be endured. The old school that don't like change yet use it only when it fits their agenda. Think rotary dial vs smart phone.

B) Target as accurate as equipment used? Well we are there since 99% of rifles used can't shoot better than .2 MOA at 100yrds I guess an e-target accurate to 2" at 1000 should be fine. :D

C) I'm dumb and just like to shoot. My wind calls will be way worse than the 1/4" e target errors so any 1/4" line cutter is simply a matter of luck at 1000 anyways.

D) I will agree that poorly set up e targets are not acceptable under any circumstance.

I’m fine with 1/4” accuracy to not pull targets but they are not reliable enough.
I’ve shot two nationals, a club match and a team match on ET’s. You’d think at least one of those would have gone smoothly but NO.

I’m sure someone will report on how well they worked yesterday at the TX state match

BTW I also think bad pullers should be banned

I thought the TX state match was pulled targets?
And yesterday was teams

This will be interesting. When there are 50 or more competitors shooting rapids there are sure to be missed shots because of simultaneous arrivals of bullets on nearby targets. More alibis? There will be a need of much more people on the firing line to help sort this problem. I think that I heard somewhere that there will be people in the pits to verify shots on target for protests and that each competitor will get a fresh center?

Missed shots during rapids I thought depended on the distance between targets => what is the spacing at Atterbury?
They are being put up in collaboration with a local club that's been using SMT

I have set them up there dozens of times and would estimate 10-12ft center to center. I know CIHPRS does do XTC matches after other matches so it must work OK. They have a very low attendance for those though so I don't know if they skip targets or not. I know I shot it once with my AR for fun to get humbled(no sling or jacket) but I hung out on the end by myself and don't recall spacing for others. I never had a missed shot in rapids.....but I did have a pretty virgin center when I was done:D
