Unplated primers fit loose and can fall out!

The unplated WW (WLR) primers are smaller in diameter than other primers, and fit loose or fall out of primer pockets!

The WLR primers I have measure 0.2099" in diameter.

The CCI Br LR primers that I have measure 0.2107" in diameter and fit just right.

You might want to check the calibration on whatever your are measuring with.

Min and max SAAMI LR primer diameter is .2105 to .2130

The micrometer is a J.T.Slocomb 1" mic. that my late dad lapped to exact zero. I read the tenth's on the mic. when appropiate.

I also measured the primers with his Brown & Sharpe mic. and got the same readings.

This mic. has also compared the diameters of the primers listed.

The unplated WW LR primers also fit loose in like new brass. That's what brought the matter to my attention.

You might want to check your unplated WW primers or be thankful that you don't have any! :)

My batch of unplated winchester large rifle primers are suspect as well... Not measured but I will. 3 smoked primers at middle if the textbook 308 loads.

Now I got several hundred I am afraid to use. I will measure them..

My WLR primers measure in diameter 0.2095 and height is 0.127.

Slightly under minimum diameter. The height is within specs.

I have noticed too some of these primers are seating quite easily.

LOT NO. GEL256G.

I don't believe it is your micrometer giving false info. It's the primers.

My "unplated" WWLR primers also mic .2095 dia. Lot no.DBL614G. Is there any corrective action being taken by WW in regard to this issue?

Why couldn't primer manufactures offer primers with a + .001 cup size to make use of all the brass that have loose primer pockets ?

Ya ever notice that this discussion of primers falling out of primer pockets seems to always involve Winchester Primers? I've not seen these issues with Federal, CCI or any of the other primers being manufactured. Just kinda makes me wonder about the quality control over at whoever makes those primers with the Winchester name on them. I've also noted that once you have shot brass say 8 times and you've clean primer pockets thoroughly (primer pocket reamers), you may not want to be using Winchester Primers as they tend to fall out quite easily, while other makes do not. Just my observations.

When Remington and Winchester lost the very lucrative contract to produce the ammunition at Lake City Army Ammunition Plant they both fell on hard times.

After losing the military contract at Lake City Winchester sold off its brass manufacturing plant and now buys its brass from the cheapest vendor.

Money is the bottom line.

The Iraq war is over and Afghanistan is winding down to an ending.

Winchester manufactures contract ammunition for the military and the "unplated" primers are "crimped" in place.

All my plated Winchester primers are older and the correct size and I do not have any unplated primers.

This is a WAG but it appears Winchester has a overabundance of leftover military contract primers. ;)

And this is my scrap brass bucket full of military "once fired" 5.56 ammunition with "over sized" primer pockets that can't be reloaded. >:(

My test criteria, if the primer can be pushed out of the primer pocket using a Lee depriming tool and pressure from one finger, the brass is junk.

Big Ed, are you still not over that “once fired” 556 brass business? ;D

Think positive – we are the “I love fat primers and skinny primer pockets” senior generation!

Now that makes perfect sense. Thanks.

Wake up Fed GM 210M. Make more. I always used the 210M until they couldn't be found anymore here locally. Has to switch to the WLR. Oh well.

Tomj44,

Your joking, right?

Note that I used the J.T Slocumb micrometer that my late dad lapped to zero for me!

Here is something to think about, Federal sells blasting 5.56 ammo using Lake City cases that failed milspec requirements, meaning these cases are rejects and the military didn't even want them. And Federal turns around and sells them to us so we can shoot Zombies with cases with excess neck runout.
(so forum members can tease us about cartridge cases being seconds) >:(

jlow, above is neck runout maximus "humor", I broke down and bought some Nosler custom brass to use as a baseline and this brass is excellent in weight and uniformity. It will be "ONLY" shot in my bolt action .223 that doesn't throw perfectly good .223/5.56 brass away and make you go look for it.

All you have to do is ask yourself two questions.
1. Why are these Winchester primers not plated?
2. Where does Winchester use non-plated primers?

Below, Federal ammunition loaded in Lake City cases and the two type primer crimps being used to "hold" the primer in the primer pocket by Federal. Please note the military does not use the four staked method of crimping primers at Lake City.

What we really need is for the forum members to post the current diameter of the brands of primers they are using. That way we will know "WHAT PRIMERS DO FIT SNUGLY IN THE PRIMER POCKETS". ::)

Big Ed – How come you didn’t buy Lapua? :D

I’ve done some small rifle primer diameter measurements in the past with a Mito micrometer. Each sample is 20 random primers.

Rem 71/2 – 0.1749” (range 0.0005”)
CCI400 – 0.1752” (range 0.0006”)
Wolf SRM – 0.1750” (range 0.0007”)

For large rifle primer, I’ve only measured Rem 91/2

0.2103” Diameter (range 0.0010”)

You are the one crying about undersized Winchester primers when I do not own any. :o

Below is my micrometer that I bought in 1973 about the same time that J.T Slocumb went out of business because it did not modernize and keep up with the competition.

Also on the left is a box of primers from the same period with the others spanning the decades and upgraded packaging.

If you think your bent paper clip is more accurate than my RCBS Case Mastering Gauge then it just shows your reloading inexperience and lack of knowledge.

Below is a once fired factory loaded Winchester .303 British case, it has stretched .009 in the base web area and "YOUR" bent paper clip will not tell you this.
