Unlimited/HB Shooting

Unlimited/HB Shooting
This shooting has been my favorite since 1995 when I bought my first of 2 Rail Guns. I was fascinated with all the parts. If I would have been single back then I would have slept with the Rail. My 1st Rail was a conglomerate of 5 smiths. All worked at Sierra Bullets. Among them were Ferris Pindell, Arvie Martin, and 3 I didn't know. I still have the Rail. It is what most call an underslung gun. The rail is turned 180 deg with the barreled action under. I call it an aircraft carrier. It came with a Hart 6PPC barrel and original SAKO 220 Brass. The action is detailed Rem 600 with a stainless cone bolt. It had 2 scopes both Unertl a 6X and a 30X. First time I shot the gun in competition I shot a .1858 agg at 100 good for a win. Takes some getting used to. It is a true Rail, you shoot you return to battery. A lot of weight being pushed around on stainless rails and delrin guides. My first big competition with the Rail was in 1995 at the Visalia Invitational. The Invitational always in October is the premier 5 shot competition in the Country. A 2 day marathon of skill and guts. No Jay Youngs or Dodds back then. I thought I was hot that weekend but I had listened to some advice that got me in trouble.
The Invitational started out in a blaze of 1's all over the place and several 0's. I was hanging in there but I was not smooth. Skip Otto was next to me and he had his Rail cooking. Then my doom happened. A cease fire was called and when they said shoot or remove I chose to remove. I had been seating my bullets too far into the lands and my bullet stuck and most my powder stayed in the action. Skip had finished his group and jumped on my gun clearing powder out. I had no shots on the target and could only get 3 downrange. With a 2 inch penalty I was out of the top 10 for the Invitational. I shot some good 200 yd groups so all was not lost.
In 1996 I was hot again with the Rail. Going into the Invitational I was not going to make any screw-ups. My first 100 yd was 24th. Didn't matter my agg was a low 2. That afternoon the worst storm I have ever shot in showed up. The sky was black all afternoon. Dennis said it could snow. An electrical storm blew the computer up so hand scoring was the game that day. As we started 200 Gary Ocock said we would be lucky to finish. I didn't care I was pumped. I started at 200 with a triplet of 3's,a 4,and a 7. Since the computer wasn't working nobody knew anything except Gary. When he saw my groups he knew I'd won but he wouldn't tell me. I was hoping for a top 10 finish. When trophies were read off I got nervous. In 200 yd they didn't read my name off. Finally all the trophies were given away except 1st and I got sad. Then Dennis pulled out the 1st place trophy and said it was mine. My first trophy at a Registered Shoot. It's all I hoped for. Then the trophies for the Grand. Since I had place 24th at 100 I would have been happy to have my name read off anywhere. I cheered for all the placers. Dennis stopped again before giving out the 1st place trophy. Everybody looked around trying to figure who's name hadn't been called out. Dennis smiled again and handed me the 1st place Grand Agg trophy. I couldn't talk which is rare for me. Then Dennis reminded us Day 2 would start at 200. I was in good shape next morning the storm went away and the computer was replaced. We shot the same benches and rotated in the afternoon for 100. I was still shooting close to Gary and Skip. The first Match at 200 was won by Gary Ocock with a .150. That gave him the lead in the Invitational. He never looked back. Skip had a chance to win but lost a shot straight up at 100. Gary won the 200. Gary was 1st in the Invitational. I think he has won 5 Invitationals. Skip was 3rd and I finished 4th.
My underslung helped me win several nice trophies some 1st. Then I bought my wood top Rail. This one designed by Eric Miller features ball bearing guides, air craft quality Eric reminded me, riding on stainless guides. Could have slept with this one too but my wife wouldn't let it in the bed. This Rail operates fast on the rails. I use a spring and catch the trigger guard as it recoils. I ease the top to the front with the aid of the spring. I usually put a 22 PPC barrel on the gun. It has a Wichita 1375 action a Weaver 36 scope. The gun is too hot to handle at times. I finished 4th in the Visalia/Phoenix Invitational with it. A 4 day Shoot of 5 shot. I shot an .18XX agg at 200 at both Ranges. This is my main Rail now because I have 5 barrels for it and I love to shoot 22 PPC in Rail Guns. All my Rail barrels for either gun are 1.35. I use Hart, Krieger, and a Snake River barrel. My calibers are 22PPC, 6PPC, 6BRS. The 22 PPC are .243 & .245 nk. The 6PPC are all .262 nk. I also have a good amount of trophies with this gun.

Now you can see why I favor UNL/HB competition. Some feel Rails are where shooters should start. I agree. But at Raton with 75 benches and rotation after every Match you must prepare or die on the pad.

Unlimited/HB Shooting
The season for Unlimited/HB shooting is coming up. Rails guns are the experimental lab where most everything that is benchrest gets tested.
This is where you can test the best equipment money can buy and have something that you make the decisions on. Nothing in the shooting world compares with a full blown rail and nothing can shoots with one.
First up for the SW boys is the June 11 IBS HB 5 shot, next is the June 17 Visalia Calif State 10 shot and June 18 5 Shot, next June 25 Logan Utah 5 shot next July 2 5 shot, next the July 9 Palomino 10 shot Regional, next Aug 12,13 Central Springville Utah State 5 Shot, next Aug 13 San Gabriel 5 Shot, next Aug 20 Logan Utah 5 Shot, next October 8 San Gabriel Invitational 5 Shot, next Oct 8 Phoenix Arizona State State 10 shot 100, next Oct 14,15 Visalia Invitational 5 Shot, November 4 Arizona State 10 Shot 200.
San Gabriel has already had a NBRSA UNL 5 shot in March. Phoenix has scheduled a IBS 5 Shot in December the last 5 years haven't seen it on this years schedule yet.
As you can see UNL/HB is a popular class in SW benchrest shooting. Something for everybody. Add the Nats in July/Aug and there is a lot of ass kicking going on. Generally in 5 shot all the classes of guns can shoot somewhat competitvely, though the lower aggs end up with the Rail guys. Whereas the 10 shot is where the rail guns hang out, 1.350 barrels the norm. How does 10 shot into .110 sound. Sounds kind of scary. Want to see a nice display of rails check www.sgbenchrest.com on the Rail Gun page.

July 9th is a10 shot Unlimited match in the Southwest Regional shoot, not a State Shoot

Big Guns to the Plate
Unlimited shooting is starting with a vengeance tomorrow. San Gabriel is having an IBS HB shoot. Next week Visalia the hot rail range in the SW region is having a 2 day Unlimited shoot. Saturday 10 shot. Sunday 5 shot. Saturday is part 1 of the Calif State 4 Gun. Also in July Reno is having the Regional Unlimited.
All this leads up to the NBRSA Nats at Raton where unlimited will be the first 2 days. 75 benches rotation after each of 8 matches. Plan ahead for this one. A good wagon is a necessity with a rail gun for 15 bench rotations.
Rails are where its at for those that can handle one.

Visalia 10/5 Unlimited Shoot
As expected the Visalia Shoot last weekend was vintage Visalia. This is home away for me. Not sure how to Post pictures but will add some to this Post soon. We had shooters from Washington, Arizona, So. Calif, and the Bay area. I am more than fond of an Unlimited Shoot, I can't get enough. We had 35 shooters. Weather was in the 100 deg area both days with humidity in the mid 20's.

100 yd 10 shot
Tom Libby the NBRSA record holder at .087 I think was there. He did shoot a pair of .1's awesome. But 1st place went to Lester Bruno with a .2172 agg. Lester shot triple 1's. Lawrence Weisdorn one our San Gabriel guys and last years National Champion at 100 yd shot a .2364 agg. George Raymond another San Gabriel shooter was 3rd at .2378. Francis Lee was 4th at .2388. Steve Kostanich of Washington State was 5th with a .2408. One special consideration award here Jason Peterson one of our San Gabriel shooters finished 6th with a nice .2506. In past shoots a .2506 would have good for 1st place at the Calif State Shoot. Jason comes and goes in BR because his job keeps him out of state. Small group was Bob Dorton's .117.
200 yd 10 shot
Richard Mooers another San Gabriel guy coming out retirement again was 1st at .2546. Lester Bruno was 2nd at .2612. Lawrence Weisdorn was 3rd at .2613. Tom Price old 4 in the wood one on the target was 4th at .2739. Del Bishop of Washington State was 5th at .2795. Small group was Tom Price's .363.
Grand 10 shot
Lester Bruno was 1st with a .2392 agg. Lawrence Weisdorn was 2nd with a .2488. Steve Kostanich was 3rd with a .2626. Richard Mooers was 4th with a .2745. George Raymond was 5th with a .2785.
On Saturday we rotated 9 benches between 100 & 200 yds. On Sunday we shot 200 from the same bench as the days before 200 and rotated after the 200 for the last 100 yd event.
200yd 5 shot
Again Lester Bruno was 1st this time with a .1399 agg. This will be sent in as a possible NBRSA record. Steve Kostanich 2nd with a .1702. Jason Peterson was 3rd with a .1768 nice going kid. Richard Mooers was 4th with a .1784. Tom Libby was 5th with a .1970. 5 aggs in the 1's at 200 yds that's awesome. I would say SW Region should do well at the NBRSA Nats at Raton next month.
100yd 5 shot
Lester Bruno was 1st at .1870 agg. Carolyn Libby was 2nd at .1874. Dan Lutke was 3rd at .1920. Steve Kostanich was 4th at .1980. Tom Price was 5th at .2018.
Grand 5 shot
Lester Bruno 1st at .1634 agg. Steve Kostanich was 2nd at .1841. Richard Mooers was 3rd at .1934. Tom Libby was 4th at .2073. Bill Mellor who prepares the Visalia shoot reports was 5th at .2115.

The Visalia group is a fairly consistent in who shows up. Dennis Thornberry our NBRSA Prez has run the Visalia Shoots since since 1981. As of now there are 3 short range BR sites in California. They are Visalia, San Gabriel, and Folsom. That's 3 more than some states. If you add the rest of the SW Region there are plenty of Shoots for everybody.

Stephen

Believe it or not, two bag guns placed 2nd and 3rd at the NBRSA Va state championship in 10 shot 100yds UNL today. Apparently there were 35 guns that competed with some pretty big names in attendance. Just thought you might find this interesting.

Tightneck
I heard some of that on Stan Ware Chat. Seems Allen Arnette won. I suppose Wayne Campbell, Bill Goad, maybe Tony Boyer, Jack Neary, John Brown were there. These are some of the big names in BR that could be there. Two bag guns placing in 10 shot that's a new one for me. See how the 200 yd goes tomorrow.

Apparently Ted Manning finished 2nd to Allen in the unl. as well as the four gun. I believe he shot his LV all weekend using 3 different barrels. I havent seen any official reults, just going on other posts.

Ted Manning has been shooting a long time. Won a lot in the SE Region and shot some nice aggs. At 100yds a lot of things can happen allowing a bag gun to place. On of my cohorts Elton Jeffrey won the Calif 100 yd State 10 shot a couple years ago with his Sporter. He was shooting the first barrel he ever chambered that weekend.
Ted by the way was a major league baseball pitcher for the Yankees. If I wanted to shoot unlimited I would shoot it with any BR gun. You can easily add a Cruiser weight barrel to a bag gun and be competitive. I have a designated Cruiser that has 5 barrels all 1.35 dia. Take a chance shoot a UNL/HB event.
