Just published a new video on Understanding Muzzle Velocity: https://youtu.be/8tnTYE0b3J4

Muzzle velocity is an important variable for long range shooters. This video covers some key concepts for beginners and also goes into some advanced topics that are not normally encountered to keep it interesting for experienced shooters as well.

Chapters:
00:00 Intro and Motivation
04:28 Statistics
11:19 Sky Screen Chronographs
25:29 Mangetospeed
29:11 Magnetospeed - Advanced
39:26 Radar Chronographs
48:34 Truing Muzzle Velocity
54:06 Summary

Enjoy!

Thanks Bryan, really like your video. And the part regarding MagnetoSpeed where you address the issue of the shockwave bounce. 5 years ago I did a test that showed the same kind of result you had, where I actually rotated the bayonet all the way around to include at the top (upside down). :) The picture below is the results (note the other shots onto the black dots are before attaching the MagnetoSpeed.

YES!

The hallmark of a good scientific experiment is repeatability, and I'm happy to see that this result is repeatable.

And, I see the same thing is happening with your 'deflected' groups in relation to the others; the deflected shots are biased low, regardless of what orientation the MS is attached.

My interpretation of this...
The shockwaves reflect off the bayonet back up into the bullet which effectively introduces a 'launch dynamic'. This depresses the BC and the bullet bleeds velocity until stability returns it to near zero yaw flight. But during the part of the flight where the launch dynamic lowered the BC, that resulted in slightly more drop.

Of historical interest...
In Franklin Manns 1909 book: "The Bullets' Flight From Powder To Target", he describes 'plank shooting', in which he would shoot over a plank, parallel and close to the trajectory for several feet. The effect (of the shockwave reflecting back up into the bullet) is to induce a large yaw without hitting the bullet with anything hard. This was done to study the epicyclic motion that resulted from a launch dynamic, and was part of the early work done to understand spin stability.
