My (now 19, almost 20 year old) grandson is a good example of this quandary. When he was 18, he wanted a Benelli shotgun, saved his money and bought one. The next day, he and his buddies had a box of clay birds up back of our house and had a fine time. They had all learned about guns, gun safety in general from a very young age. No harm, no foul, right. The problem is that the NEXT 18 year old that walks into the LGS where my grandson bought his Benelli might well be some street thug with his pants below the crack of his ass, his ball cap on sideways and a pocket full of drug money intent on dealing with an opposing gang member or he might be a kid with serious mental health issues who had no or very little good parenting at all and who grew up in a video game world. I'm not offering an opinion or a suggested solution but this is the problem that we face. Maybe the system should be such that my grandson should have had to have one of his parents sign off on the ATF form before he would have been permitted to buy his Benelli. Again, I don't have an answer but I'd sure be interested in hearing all of your thoughts on this matter.
With a 20 year old grandson you have to be near my age. I was trying to think (way) back at my state of mind and maturity at age 18. Actually scares me a little. No, I wasn't a bad kid and never did use drugs or drink (thanks to an alcoholic father) but still I knew very little about what was going on in the world. I didn't read the paper and didn't watch the news. I only hung around with kids my own age who probably knew no more. My only concerns were cars and girls. I did own a single shot shotgun then. I worked night shift alone at a gas station and kept the shotgun loaded just inside the back room door. An attendant was killed at the station directly across the street while I worked there.
The thought of doing a mass shooting would never have entered my mind, ever. Yet again being young and impressionable with a hair-trigger temper, I may have possibly taken things out on an individual if I felt the need arise. As the years pass you see things from a different perspective. Still the question about 18? Many people are mature enough at that age or even earlier although some others are not, at any age. How do you tell them apart? I don't know if there is a good solution without limiting the rights of others.
And IMO raise the minimum age for the military...If you are going to raise the age of guns to 21 that’s fine by me! Also raise the age for voting and require a back round Check for that too. Might as well since the slope is so slippery. That’s not the answer. Do your job (fbi), raise responsible children and know that there is evil in this world. I’m willing to bet that there is a corrilation between most people that do evil stuff like this... so let’s focus there! New countries were founded Bc of what that government is trying to do, I.e. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. We need to get back to the basics or we are going to be in a world of hurt. And if the damn media would stop making them infamous it would help!
... I don't have any problem with raising that age if it deters even one sicko.
I was given my first gun at 13 and never wanted to disappoint the man that trusted in me with it , my Grandfather. I still feel the same way today. Just my 2 cents. Thanks
I was able to talk to a progressive yesterday. He was ok with punishing everyone because of just a few bad apples. When asked why he was ok with that. He simply stated it is too hard to punish criminals so everyone must suffer. He went on to say that is why we have seat belt laws and they are making up the opioid issue. Everyone must take responsibility.
morally and spiritually bankrupt. precisely stated. -----it is a personal heart problem--Jesus can fix that problem if people would just let him!Morally and spiritually bankrupt. This is the problem. Today sickos harm others (And themselves) in ways never thought of 30 years ago. This is going to continue to evolve, today the knee jeek reaction is about Guns (as well as a deliberate pulling of heart strings by the anti 2A), tomorrow when some 18 year old runs a car through a group of students will we be talking about raising the driving age to 21?
No news to anyone on here, but until we deal with the moral compass of the US, this will not end. Problem is the compass those bitching the loudest is almost exclusively pointing south.
so very trueDifferent subject entirely but had to post it.
So does that mean we need to take away the internet since crime is rampant on the web? I bet that individual would scream bloody murder if you suggested such a thing. Funny how they turn to the constitution and their rights when it fits the narrative.
