The United States Army continues to conduct testing and training on its XM7 and XM250 – the new rifle and automatic rifle that were developed as part of the Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW) program to replace the legacy M4 Carbine and M248 light machine gun. Both small arms are chambered for the new 6.8 Remington Special Purpose Cartridge.

More horsepower at longer distances not sure it shoots flatter than what they use now., not seen the specs on it but we will need more than 1 factory, haven't read of any ammo plants blown up lately, fireworks yep. I wonder what we will export ? seems like we are encouraging other Nato country's to buy our weapons.

The 6.8X51 or .277Sig Fury cartridge, not the 6.8 SPC. That was a proposal dating from 2020 as noted in the article.
The SPC is barely alive these days.

I read it has a velocity 200 fps faster than the 7.62x39. Woohoo!
The plant is an addition to the Lake City plant.
Can’t wait for them to dump all the 5.56 ammo!

Sig Fury 135 grain bullet 3000FPS 2694 ft lbs energy Russian 7.62-39 122grain bullet 2396 FPS 2108ft lbs energy. While it is more than 200FPS faster than a cartridge designed in 1946, on paper it doesn't sound like the hammer of Thor. It sounds like its close to equal with my 260 Remington in a DPMS ar10 with 123 grain bullets. Source didn't mention if this was go to war ammo, or practice ammo. The story is that US troops will only shoot practice ammo and not be issued the real thing until war breaks out. How will they know its capablities if they don't shoot the real thing?

My point was I do not know if the specs I gave are for practice ammo or magic bullets. I assume practice bullets because the numbers while way better than com bloc ammo inspired in the 1940s are still far from magic.

New 6.8 mm cartridge is pointless, I dont care how flat it shoots.
The new war is drones vs personal and armor and drones dont care what bullet you have in your rifle. The US should invest in manufacturing drones not
ammo.

The current facilities at Lake City are very old. A new building, with new current equipment, is being built for the 6.8x51 Sig round. I was told the details about the go to war bullet and its performance are classified.
