UMAR 22-250 platform 5.56, .223, 22lr

Hello all,

I'm new here. I have a question i hope you can help me with.

Olympic Arms recently came out with their UMAR platform that extends the magazine receiver to allow a bigger magazine and thus the 22-250 round. They have a bolt catch that you can switch out to go from the larger mag to a regular AR mag. It's kind of a neat system.

im interested in purchasing this platform but had a question before i took the plunge. If i purchase the full UMAR 22-250 rifle I would be interested in getting some different uppers for it as well.

so my question is this. the barrel for the 22-250 is .224 or 5.7 mm. can i use the same barrel if i get a 5.57 upper that has the same diameter of ammunition of .224 or 5.7 mm same goes for the .223 ammo. with the only real difference being that the rotations are more aggressive with the .223 and 5.57 rounds.

lastly would i be able to use the same barrel with a 22 lr upper. this is the only round that is slightly smaller diameter of .223 or 5.6 mm

I'm wanting to do a take down system for the barrel like the ones from pantheon arms and change out my uppers to be able to plink with 22 lr and then be able to shoot 5.56 or .223 from another upper and lastly the 22-250. so it would be 3 uppers with the same barrel and lower.

I'm just trying to see if this is possible and if any of you would see any complications with a project like this. I would just really want to get the most out of the platform and the 22 caliber seems to be the most versatile with this system and has the most potential to be able to use the same barrel. I think i would get different length and twist barrels eventually but would love to be able to use the same barrel across all those ammunition to begin with.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

COOL WHIP

If I understand your question the answer is that each cartridge is going to require a separate barrel , even if they have the same bore diameter. I see no gains to be had . You would be better off having a dedicated 223 /5.56 platform and a ar-10 platform for larger , 22-250 to 308

Does each cartridge need a different barrel because of pressure issues and differences? Or is it the twist? Or how the barrel connects with the upper receiver? It seems like it should be possible. Maybe the different cartridges would wear on the barrel differently, although they are the same bore diameter. I don't know. It’s just an idea i wanted to see if it was possible. Without buying something and potentially ruining it by testing my hypothesis. Thank you for the response.
