ultrasonic cleaning v. SS tumbling

Regarding your posting on ultra-sonic cleaning of cases, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on wet tumbling with stainless steel pin media?

Hi Richard, welcome to the forum.

First off, I did a little maintenance on your post, since the original post you brought back wasn't related to the topic and was from 3 years ago... :-) I moved it to our Reloading forum and made the topic more pertinent to your question.

As far as your question goes, I think if you do a quick forum search, you'll find lots and lots of debate on this very subject. The forum search is up at the very top of the page OR you can do something with Google like:

site:forum.accurateshooter.com ultrasonic stainless steel tumbling

or some variation thereof.

Richard. I do both. I start on the deprimed cases with stainless steel pins, then resize and trim, then clean the cases off in the ultra-sonic cleaner.

I have used both.

I started with SS media about 5 years ago and have lots of experience with it. A couple of years ago I moved away from it because of the peening and brought a commercial quality US cleaner from “Ultrasonics Direct” and used their cleaning solution. It works a bit but I never found that it did the same job as the SS media.

I moved back to SS media but reducing the number of cases, double the number of pins and reduce the running time to 1 hour and have not had any more problem with peening. I also use it to remove lube but for that, I only run the brass for 10 mins and the Imperial is gone.

I still use the US but only to clean guns – it does a good job there.
