ultrasonic cleaners

was wondering what the thought is on the ultrasonic cleaners, are most of the long range guys using them and which brand-chemicals seem to work best. Thanks Bill

I have a Lyman that I have used with the Hornady one shot and the Lyman turbo sonic. I think the Hornady worked slightly better or maybe I just learned what I was doing by the time I started using the one shot. There is a really good article on the accurateshooter I believe tech section on solutions. A guy did a bunch of testing and it seemed he had stumbled on to a mixture/process that was superb. I will see if I can find it and place a link. Either way I say well worth the money. I couldn't go back to a tumbler now.

I tried one for a while, even bought a fancy commercial unit. US got the cases clean, but then I had "sticky necks" when I seated my bullets. You can work around the sticky necks problem with a variety of solutions, but those caused other problems to work around. More trouble than it was worth.

I came to the conclusion that the carbon on the inside of your case necks is your friend. Doing anything to remove it beyond a single stroke with with a nylon brush (ultrasonic or stainless steel pins) is counter productive.

Others have different opinions, but my scores went up when I stopped over-cleaning my brass. It has the added benefit of being easier.

Hmmm, I'm going to pay attention to this once. The carbon reducing friction is something that never really crossed my mind. You could be on to something.

I use one, I use water, vinegar and a dollop of laundry soap.

I also have a big Dillon polisher that I toss all my brass in after I run it in the US to make it look pretty.

I stopped treating rifle brass like Michelle Obama's jewelry, life's too short to worry about a little discoloration and does nothing for accuracy. I just clean the outside necks, and if the carbon gets too thick inside I will begrudgingly throw them in an ultrasonic cleaner.
