Ultrasonic Cleaner Solvent Question

Dimwit Flathead

It's the Juggernaut, Bitch!
This has prolly already been hashed to death on this forum, but has anybody had a bad experience using sulfamic acid based solvent in their ultrasonic cleaner? I've been experimenting with it for the last several weeks with brass I've picked up at the range, and find that it makes brass squeaky clean inside and out in about 5 minutes, depending on how stiff a solution is used. These cleaners are easily purchased in the grocery store which makes them very attractive as far as availability goes. I have had a few cases develop a very thin, spotty copper coating, but it hasn't seemed to cause any problems and comes off easily. I also use a baking soda rinse just to make sure any residue has been neutralized before a few clean water rinses.

Has anybody had brass go brittle or become otherwise unusable from the above? Have any of you discovered any other pitfalls to using sulfamic acid solvents? I'm still in the experimental phase of ultrasonic cleaing. Thanx in advance for the help.

That is a pretty fast clean up time for range brass.

What are the cleaners that you are using? I would be willing to some myself.

I'ver never heard of sulfamic acid. Does it have a commercial name?

On the same subject, I've been meaning to try itaconic acid and Oxy-Clean.

I've had good results with the vinegar/water/soap but its a lot of steps.

Commonly available as Lime Away and Kaboom. Make sure you don't get the stuff with chlorine bleach. There are probably other cleaners that contain it, but look for the ones that remove lime. It seems to be used mostly as a scaler....
