Ultralight Rifle Build, need help

If you were dead set on building a .50 MOA, full custom Ultralight Rifle (under 6lbs) what components would you spend your hard earned $$ on?? Caliber is 6.5 Creed or 7mm-08 (not a cartridge debate) What's your build and why u picked those specific components.

It's all gonna come down to the Barrel, chambering job, and reloading.

And of course the scope has to perform flawlessly.

So realistically you can get any off the shelf lightweight hunting rifle and re-barrel it with a quality Bartlein, Broughton, Brux, Hawk Hill, Benchmark, Proof, Krieger and the like barrel, work up a load with known quality components and you'll have a half moa guaranteed lightweight hunting rifle.

Or just get one right out of the box....

A lightweight rifle is harder to shoot accurately or to get it accurate. A under 6 pound rifle makes it harder. It can be done but under 6 pound makes it tough. You need a very light stock, action and barrel. Matt

Kevin Weaver built me a light weight walking gun. we used a pierce titanium action, 24" #1 barrel, a hi-tech carbon sheep hunter stock, and a March 3-24 scope. entire gun with scope weighs just under 7.5 pounds. Its in his pictures section under 270wsm. He has built several rifles for me and does a great job. very reasonable turn around time and good to deal with.

What about the Lothar Walther Ultra Light Weight barrel with some kind of carbon fiber stock and TI action? Seems like a decent CF stock and TI action will help combine with the aluminum shrouded LW ultra light barrel.

I just emailed LW about the barrels actually. Last info I found online is they run about $900. I am looking to throw it on a savage so I'd get it as a prefit from them in 6.5x47L.

There are some great factory light weight rifles out there. I know you said a build, but if .5 moa is what u are looking for, check out howa mountain rifle, under 6lbs, both chamber in options you are looking at. I own 3 how as and all hammer well under .5moa.

This is a 300wm I put together for a local customer. Weight was right at 7lbs(minus scope) using all of the shelf components. Even has a 27" barrel. R700 LA, B&C ULTRA light stock (no aluminum skeleton), Talley LW rings, aluminum bottom metal. I've done the same thing in 6.5 CM and 6.5x47L, because of the hole down the barrel is smaller they all weighed in about the same, but with shorter barrels than the 300. This rifle with Trophy bonded ammo is about half MOA @ 700.

The fastest way to shed pounds is a bigger bore.



This gun is 5lbs 14oz and it wears 458 bore barrel. This rifle is a solid 1 moa gun to 300yds.

If you bumped up the caliber to say 300wsm, it would help eliminate more barrel steel.

Unless you are dead set on a custom build, I would be taking a hard look at a Tikka T3 Lite. A lot of gun for the money in my opinion. Just a thought.

I have a rem model 7 in 300 WSM that weighs 7 lb 13 oz with scope. It has a factory magnum contour barrel at 22", a McMillan factory clone stock and 4.5 - 14 VX3 with a target elevation turret.
If I:
Changed the scope to a 3.5 - 10 without a target turret. I would save 3-4 oz
Eliminate the scope covers. I would save 1 oz
Flute the bolt and skeletonize the handle. I would save 2 oz

Without changing the barrel contour I am at 7lb 6 or 7 oz and the scope weighs 15 oz, which puts the basically factory gun at 6lb 8 oz without a scope. If I wanted to get creative and change the barrel to a sporter weight and possibly machine some off the action I know I can get this gun down to 6 lb or less and it's a factory gun..... You shouldn't have any problems at all getting what you want. Especially with a titanium custom action etc

Kimber makes one heck of a lightweight rifle. I have an Adirondack and it is a tack driver. I think it weighs 6 something loaded ready to go.
Not a custom but a great gun.

I have a rem 7 with a brown precion stock leupold 3.5-10 17.5in barrel that is 6#7oz with out fluting or skeleton any parts it's in 7mm -08AI shoots good easy to carry. To build one use a Ti action,rem 7 or Kimber flute and skeleton and a for a stock mickmilan brown precion or high tech any barrel of ur choice and you have 2 great calibers in mind. Adam, before I read your post, I thought you were jabbing that the best way for a lightweight was to shed a couple of pounds, comparing the photos of the 2 guys! It would be easier for me to do it that way!

I have a friend that used a few X-treme titanium actions for customers. He was not very impressed with the machine work on the actions. On the other hand, he is now using the Lone Peak line of titanium actions and he says they are a work of art. As good as anything he has ever seen in 416 stainless, which is much easier to machine. He is a machinist by trade and very picky. Hope this helps.

Exactly what I was looking for Paul. Thank you. The Lone Peak Fuzion is the other one I was looking at. Really good looking piece of metal. I was impressed when I emailed Lone Peak about the Fuzion Ti in .590" Lapua size and they got back to me right away with all the answers. Some of these other guys are a pain to get a reply from. I emailed X-Treme a few days ago and still nothing.

FYI, Lone Peak does offer the Fuzion action with a Ti version for 338 Lapua. No offering for Right bolt, left port tho Screen shot below of the email with details for anyone who might be interested.
