Ultra slow powder in .243?

I've been getting very good results using 46 grains of H-1000 behind the 105 Amax in my 26" Savage varmint barrel. I saw Wideners has the IMR 5010 surplus powder for 32 bucks for 8 lbs.

Since the thought of 4 buck-a-pound powder has me salivating, I'm very tempted to buy a keg to test it out, but as I have very limited reloading experienc am wondering if it's possible to run too slow of a powder?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Believe me don't shoot 5010 in your 243 win. Even it it does shoot just think of all that unburnt powder going through your barrel like a sand blaster. 5010 is a very slow burning powder better suited to over bore mags and ultra heavy bullets. Its works great in 338-378 with 300's. I shot it in two 7 wsm barrels with 180 bergers, excellent accuracy to start with a 300 rounds later those barrels were junk. Throats like new but bores rougher than a cob. My earlier on learning experience cost me two great barrels please don't shoot it in your 243. maybe try some ramshot magnum IMR 7828 H 1000. Reed

Reed,

Thanks for your first hand experience. I'll take your advice and stick to the H-1000.

I appreciate it.
