I suspect the “astronut” was conscious during his plummet back too the ground with just enough time to realize that he very much miscalculation a whole lot engineering concepts.

Apparently this guy never learned of Evel Knievel’s attempt with a steam powered rocket which his parachute deployed unexpectedly early which ended in old Evel taking a swim in the Snake River.

You know, I'm from Idaho's Snake River valley (but far downstream from his launch site) and followed that closely at the time. But reading your post, something popped into my head, an epiphany: I wouldn't put it past Evel to have arranged for that "early" chute deployment, to save his bacon while still getting all the glory and publicity. Odd it never occurred to me before. Sure it's a conspiracy theory, but it ain't wholly unlikely.

If you can find the original film with the cockpit shots (I watched it on TV at the time it happened) you’ll see and hear he was freaked out (listen to his voice) and no doubt in my mind he pulled the chute at launch. Even as a kid I immediately recognized the dude got scared and semi-bailed. Lucky for Evil the chute didn’t get ripped off like the Lawn Dart Flat Earther guy.
