Ultimate coyote round.

This is what has my attention lately it's a 257WSM, It is up there with my 257 Weatherby speed wise. No special dies needed either, all I do is take 270WSM brass and run it through a 25WSSM die. That takes care of the neck and shoulder, and a gutted 270WSM to full length size, I have these 85 Noslers sailing way over 4000 fps no problem. From a 28" 10 twist barrel this arguably is they ultimate coyote round.

NOPE......The 6x6.8 & 6x45 running suppressed w/55g bullets are the best coyote calibers out to 700+ yards when the need arises....:)
28" bbl to long, muzzle blast to loud, bullet to heavy, gun to heavy, for carrying & calling.
Yours is good for antelope/deer and sitting on a bench for p-dogs at 700+ yards.
All IMO naturally.
What action will this build be on?

It is screwed onto a timed and trued savage action with a sav2 trigger, and boyds thumbhole topped off with a
Swift 6-24X50. I also have a 6WSM that is pretty versatile since shoots anything from 58gr Vmax's to 107gr Sierra's

PS: I worked on a farm nearly my hole life so carrying a 10lbs rifle doesn't phase me in the least.

They have a BC of 0.330, for those interested my load is 72gr of RL17 which translates to over 4000 Fps Sweet.

PS: I used 257 Weatherby loads as a baseline.

Savage actions...that's all I own & build upon myself.
Nice to see another rig built using a Savage as usual.

I also have several Remington's 700s that I have converted over to a barrel nut,
they are working out quite well and have made things a lot easier, they both have there pros and cons.
In any case I can buy 4 barrels for the price of one decent rig, and have got it down to 5 min to swap a barrel
That's headspaced and ready to shoot. so I have never looked back

Dean

PS: 75gr of RL17 with 75gr Vmax's are a sight to be seen, "I love equal parts powder and bullets" as well as 70gr of RL17 and Barnes 100gr TTSXs

Hey fredo, I don't like posting actual numbers anymore, I don't want to deal with the Krapp that comes with it, no matter what number I say someone will call BS. Even though they can't prove other wise, or have that chambering or have even tried that load. Speaking of over 4000fps the 75gr-75gr load is insane and several hundred fps faster than the 85gr load, and the 80gr TTSXs with there small bearing surface are by far my favorite. I just wish they weren't almost a buck a piece.

Hi Dean, I agree with you it seems like whatever is posted someone will question it.

NO worries, Dean.
Was just curious as to how your load might compare to some other combos I've pondered, or already know about. I like to wildcat stuff too, and tore up with coyote callin'/killin'. Needless to say, your thread topic stirred a bit of passionate interest in me...

Remember, the best way to shut a BS'er up, is with the truth!

Have fun with your hotrod!!!

If you really think about it the fact that it hits 4000 makes it sweet, and anything over that is a bonus.
What are some of the combos you have or were looking into.

Dean

Sounds like a blast!! That load must make a real mess :)
I have pushed 87 grain Sierras out of my 257 wby with 26" barrel, velocity @3900 fps, and when that bullet connects with a large ground hog or a fox it is REAL CARNAGE!!

I have a little .17Predator that'll make 4100 with a 30gr Gold from a 24" barrel. A friend had a variant of it that clocked 4500+ thru two chronos, front to back! Started "poof"ing 30s real quick, but he had the photo proof to back it up...

I also presently have a fast twist .22-243AI that smokes 75s @ 3600+. They're running right at 3500 in the cold months. This combo is just about ideal for me, wicked flat, low recoil, easy to load, great brass life....and hateful on a coyote!
I know close to a dozen coyote hunters who've adopted a fast twist .22-243AI since a friend & I split a reamer & built ours. To a one, they have nothing but praise for it! Some run 75s, others prefer 80s in the 3500 fps range. Some Amaxs, some VLDs...cool thing is, its great to be able to draw from their collective experience, as well as my own! Same reamer, same smith, just different guys around the country runnin' the same little demon and pounding coyotes in the dirt with them...

In hopes of making a great thing even better, I'm just about ready to experiment a bit more with the .22-243AI. Building a second rifle (a switch barrel rig) with another 1:8 twist for the heavies, and a 1:12 twist as well. Have a bunch of 60gr JLKs (.339bc) to mess with from the slower twist, hoping they'lll go 4100+ from a 26" tube. If so, that'll beat my current favorite by a few inches out to 400yds. And the recoil should be slightly less than the mild snap that the 75s allow. Really lke being able to see the coyote drop in the scope, that is a high criteria for what I want in a coyote rifle...

This project is what piqued my interest in knowing how fast you were pushing that 85. Similar b.c. & likely similar MVs, but I can only guess without asking first???

Have other buddies with some varmint hotrods that'll raise an eyebrow, too. One has a .243Catbird 6-270 Improved) that throws 70B-tips @ 4050. Another has a slow twist 6-284 that launches 55Btips @ 4350! Both are hell-on-wheels coyote destroyers. But both are getting into an area where recoil & muzzle blast is more than I'd care to endure on stand...

Anyhoo, was just curious to see how & where your 'hotrod' fit amongst those!
When this switch barrel rig is done, I'll have my Magnetospeed V3 handy & snap some pics of what each will do. Best way to prevent the BS flag from being thrown is to have the honest proof at the ready...

Have fun!

I am currently building a 6mm mach 4 . Pacnor 1-12 twist 32" long three groove . Hope to hit 4000 or 4100 with 107 Sierra . Will let you know how it goes

Post the numbers, it is a good way to teach. Other wildcatters will take note.

Contrats on a great build! How much freebore is built into your reamer? I built several 257 Weatherby's with zero freebore, awesome!

I have a 6mm Mach IV and you can get 4000 with 105s and 107s, in the beginning I formed my brass with 243wssm dies for the neck and shoulder, and a gutted 7Rem mag or 264 WinMag die when FL sizing. I now have custom dies, I don't even know why I bought them when they others worked fine.
