Types of Target Crown ???

I just bought a un fired Krieger 30br barrel chambered and crowned by savageguy on this forum.
question is, the crown is 90degrees square to the bore single point cut completely flat.
I am used to a 11degree or a recessed target crown but not one that is flat with no protection from the occasional bump into the truck door.

Do the flat crowns shoot? Is it worth the effort to send and have another crown cut?

Flat is fine, but I recess my crowns for protection.

I'm used to having some kind of protection. But it is what it is,
My other concern is how they shoot, anybody have experience shooting a flat crown?

Flat crowns shoot great, no accuracy issues. It's all I use.

G'Day Fella's,

T Singleton, I was left with the impression that an 11 Degree crown was specifically used with Flat Based bullets and a 90 Degree or Square Crown, was for either Flat Base or Boat Tailed bullets?

Doh!

That is a load of hogwash that some gun writers will trot out when they need an article to collect their monthly check from a given gun magazine (there are many, not talking about any mag or author in particular).

I use whatever crown my gunsmith is comfortable with when barreling for my BR rifles. These are both 6PPC short range, and also 1000 yard BR rifles. Many good BR shooters prefer a flat crown, but I have not been able to see a difference on the target (maybe I don't shoot well enough).

I will often try flat base and boat tail bullets in the same barrel/crown combo to see what the barrel prefers, and there is no pattern relating to a crown that I can see. As long as the crown is good (well machined and not warn from cleaning) it will shoot (all other parts of the "system" being capable).

They type of crown that you like to look at is the one that you ought to have.

There is ABSOLUTELY no difference in performance from one crown to another. Whether it be a flat crown, step crown, 11°, 10°, 9°, whatever, the most important feature of any crown is that is is cut contentric to the center line of the bore and that's it.

I prefer an 11° for the way it looks and that it also recesses the bore for a protection like a step crown, but it offers no advantage in performance. Whenever I am doing a barrel for someone, I will do whatever crown they prefer as well as a slight chamfer or no chamfer on the lands as the customer should get what he wants.

Dwight Scott has done many barrels for me. I always was building 280AI`s or 7mm/338RUM`s, but I finally got into shooting competitions and things changed. He made those decisions for me and was never questioned. I started getting 90 degree crowns on anything he considered target barrel. I now do my own work, and have followed suit. I do a stepped down about .025" to a 90 degree flat crown. Chris is companions with the best long range shooters in this USA so trust his judgement, Tim

Any style of crown is just as accurate as the next just as long as it is perfectly square & concentric to the bore and has a sharp edge & is burr free.
