two savage questions

Is your rifle a single shot? I’m thinking if it’s a 7/8 barrel nut you probably only have two action screws.

If it’s a target action when you flip the gun over the stock should have 4 screws. 3 for the action and one for the trigger guard retaining.
yes it has 4 screws

My RBLP large shank single shot had three screw holes that were threaded. Now the very rear hole is threaded and another added so I can use 4.4 stocks. A buddy wanted it for ever, but no barrel on it. So I came up with a barrel and he had it for a year “testing”. Well his junk batch of brass and the match chamber did not like each other, and he didn’t care for the HS stock.
Now that it is fixed for an easier to find stock/chassis he wants it, NOT.

Did you actually measure it yet? Can you post a picture?
three holes in front of the trigger, roughly 4 1/2 inches for the farthest ones apart. One hole behind the trigger. The barrel nut is 7/8th. It is right bolt and left port. The barrel is 30" with 1/7 twist. The stock is an HS Precision with pillars and bedding.
Could this have been a custom order rifle ?

As a side note, if someone made a decent BR or F Class stock for these M12 target rifles (there must be hundreds of them floating around!) they would make a fortune. ;)

They’re out there and show up for sale once in a while. However McMillan, Manners, and others will make one for a single shot target action.
They will no longer however do any type of magazine inlet due to savages NUMEROUS magazine changes over the years.

Here’s a McMillan I had done not too long ago. Took 7 weeks.

If it is a small shank, then yes, the action could have been a custom order. Need a pic to confirm. Gotta ask... are you including the recoil lug in that 7/8" length?

Is it a factory barrel? I think the only 7 twist that Savage made was a .223.

With the HS stock, it sounds like a LRPV, but those came with 26" barrels. The factory 30" barrels were usually only on the competition models.

I am measuring only the nut. It is a 223. The Savage factory barrel is stamped 223 and with 7 twist model 12
the action is right bolt with left feed

Here's an old graph of serial numbers and dates of manufacture:

You might try calling Savage, (800) 370-0708, to see if they have any info on it. Don't get your hopes too high. Savage ownership has changed and they may not have info from previous owners.

Please let us know what you find.

If you’re gonna call me out atleast show me a small shank target action. Not an old 2 screw small shank single shot varmint action either. Show us a 3 screw target action that is small shank… I will wait.
I have never seen a small shank target action either
