twist rate for 87 gr bullet

I was wondering if a 12 twist in 6br would stabilize the HORNADY 87 gr bthp bullet not the vmax but the std bthp as it is a bit shorter?

In my travels i`ve found that the 87 needs more horse power, or a 10 twist,BUT no two barrels are alike.....

Sorry for the confusion.

Berger recommends 10 twist for their 87 gr 6mm hunting bullets.

I have killed PDs out to 1,020 yards with the 87 grain V-Max with a 12-twist Shilen barrel, BUT it was chambered in 6x284 and muzzle velocity was around 3,600 FPS. Never had a problem with twist. I fire formed a 6mm Dasher a couple weeks ago using 80-grain Noslers out of a 13.5-twist Bartlein barrel. No stabilization problems there either. I would say it's going to be close, but you have as good a chance of it working as not.

I am betting no. My 6 Rem 1:12 twist 28" will stabilize the 87 VMax only if I run it wide open (3450 fps). If slow it down to 3400 fps the holes don't look round always in the target. However, the 75 VMax shines at 3600 fps. I don't think you can reach 3450 fps in your 6BR. Luck, Tim

I know that a 12 twist will stabilize a 85gr Sierra bthp Gameking.

My Krieger 13.5 twist shoots that same bullet in the low 2's. The only thing that keeps in out of the 1's is me.

Check out this post if you think the 87 vmax won't stabilize in a 12 twist.

My 6mm Remington has a Shilen 12 twist and shoots 85 gr Sierras BTHP extremely well. .25-.50 3 shot groups in a sporter barrell #3. Great Antelope bullet, or it has been for me.........My longest kill was a 450 yd shot, dropped in its tracks, spine shot, Luck MAY have been a great part of the shot. :D

Thanks for all the replies. It seem that most people have experience with the v-max. I was looking at the 87 bthp because it is a shorter bullet with less surface area. I'll buy a box and see if my rifle like em

Cutting to the chase, if you want a flexible barrel for mid-weights, get a 10 twist.
