Twist rate for 68 grainers in 6 br

Guys im currently putting a 6 br together for dad. I shoot 3 6 brs and all have 8 twist. Im looking for a 100-300 yard paper puncher with the 68- 80 grainers. What is the best twist rate for this. How about barrel length?
Thank u
Good Shooting To All

I agree with hollyspring that you'll need a 12 twist to stabilize the 80Grainers. Barrel length is a personal preference but you could finish one off as short as 22" and still have plenty of velocity to shoot to 300yds.

Could you go with and is it recommended to go with a 28" barrel?

28" Heavy Varmit, 12 twist, just wondering.

I have a Lilja 1:8 twist that I shoot Siera 107g without any problem, but i ALSO shoot Bart Ultra 68g bullets with excellent accuracy. Why not use what you already have??

My 1x10 twist Cooper shoots lights out with 70 - 95 grain bullets, Bergers, Sierras, Hornady etc.
Good luck.

why go up to the 80gr for 100-300m ?

I shot my 13.5 twist at 860m gong with 68gr Bergers

I'd stay with 55-70gr and get a 13.5-14 twist for short distance.

the heavier bullets need more distance to shine :)

My 1 in 13 shoots 68's as well as the 80 bergers .
The bergers have printed 1" and less at 500 M on a calm day

I have a 6BR with a 14 twist barrel that I compete with at 100 - 300 yard Benchrest. It shoots 67 gr customs or the 68 gr Bergers equally well. I have just bought a couple thousand of the new Berger Column bullets (64.2 gr) for next year. Heavier bullets are no advantage at this distance and the flat bases really do shine.

I have also used this gun to shoot our 600 yard range (for fun, not competition) using 70 gr SMKs and it shoots very well.

My 1 in 10 Cooper Phoenix came with a .084 test target using 70 grainers. My first three shots out of it with 75 grain Speer varmint bullets at 100 yards was .234. I haven't fooled with it since due to winter. Others that have this rifle tell me that it shoots Berger 88 grain varmint bullets amazingly well.

How fast do you intend to push those little pills? I'd figure the 60 grainers at 1:8 but probably prefer a 1:10 for the 80 grainers if they're under 2800 fps. However, I'd lean for the 1:8 if I intended to try covering both

the 8 twist is for +100gr, for the 60-70gr the 13.5-14 twist work best.

10-12 twist would be good for 80-100gr bullets..

Wow we are all over the course here. 1:8 ,1:10 , 1:12 , 1:13 , 1:13.5 , 1:14. I didnt expect such a wide range here. I was figuring that there was one twist that was just perfect for those little 68's.

To be honest it has been stated by many answering this thread, if you intend to shoot short range benchrest (100-300), then the most common bullet wt. is the 66-68g. For that the most commonly used twist rate is 13-14.

if you only use the 68gr flatbased bullets then there is.. in warm climate the 14 twist, in cold areas the 13.5 twist.

if you want to use heavier bullets then you need another barrel...

Yeah, you're right dansig. Thanks for raising that point. I was focusing on the calc. for <2800 fps and velocities beyond that would prefer at 1:13.5 - 1:14 would work best (Greenhill)

Benchresters that have been setting records with pills ranging from 63-69Gr's for years have mainly shot 14 Twists. As long as you stay with just the 68Grainers 14 would be optimum but once you throw in that 80 Grainer, you'll need a faster twist.

In 100 & 200 yard serious benchrest competition. Per Tony Boyer's book. The 6PPC shooters use a 13.0 or 15.0 twist barrel with 62-68 grain bullets, 14:1 is the norm.
