Twist needed for VLD's

Hi everyone,

I am going to undertake some longer range shooting with my .243. I'm thinking at 500yards plus a vld would be the ticket. My barrel is 1-9.25 twist.

Can I stabilize the 95 hunting bergers? they recommend 9 twist.

and how about 105 vld bergers? they recommend 8 twist.

Thanks in advance for your wisdom

Paul

Paul,

95 gr should work, but 105 will not. Another good bullet is the 90gr BT Berger.

Thanks for that Mark, it's what I expected but thought someone had been there and done it. Yep the 90's are a option. the 90gr nosler BT my rifle loves.

thanks
Paul

Hi, I did get both the 95 and 105 bergers to shoot in the rem 700. Both held around an MOA to 500 yards but it took me about 400 rounds to do it. I'm at about 2000' too. I used h 414, h1000, imr 4350 and h4350. H414 was the best but is very temp sensitive. H1000 also worked well. The 105's were definatly a lot harder to get to work. I ended up settling on 75gr vmax because they were more consistent. I ended up ordering a 7.5 twist so I could get the most out of the 105's.

I have had great luck from the start using 105 VLD hunting bullets out of my Remington varmint barreled 700 with Retumbo powder. I can get them touching at 200 yds but I haven't chronographed them yet, I just need the wind to quit blowing so hard when I'm not working to do so. I didn't care for the 95 vld's because the jump was so far. And yes the 105's are touching the lands.

You mentioned Hunting VLD's so I assume you want to kill something at 500 yards. The "88 gr Match Grade High BC FB Varmint" has a very good reputation if you don't plan on eating what you shoot.

I shoot the 95VLD out of a Savage 1:9.25 twist. It shoots lights out! The 105's not so much. With my 95"s I shoot 41.9 H4350 in a winchester case cci br2's jamming 10k. 3/8" or less @ 200 in my rifle. 1.5" or less @500. But as always your rifle and milage may vary. Matt

Yes I am wanting to be able to shoot dogs out there a ways, and no I don't plan on eating them. But it would be a great lope round as well. When I started I picked up a box of 105 and 95 looking for the right ticket for this 243 that I picked up. It is the first one that I have ever played with and reloaded for. The 88 FB varmint sounds like it would be a sweet round as well and I might do some work with it, when supplies
get restocked around here. There is product coming in, but gone as soon as its unpacked.

105 Amax will stabilize. I have the same twist barrel and shoot the 105 Amax exclusivly. I haven't tried the Berger 105s yet.

Thanks everyone for the info, My range report on the 95 hunting VLD's in my .243

A couple weeks ago I did the powder ladder with 44.5 and 45 grains of H4831sc being the best with the same point of impact, and .54 group on the 44.5, shooter error prevented the 45 grain group from matching it. they were .020 off the lands. I then reloaded 44.7 grains for 6 rounds each of .010, .050, 090, and .130 jump as berger recommends. the last two were impressive, (for me) with .36 and .26 groups My savage predator liked them all tho so I have three powders and three bullets that Ive tried get under 1/2 moa. but these bergers were the best so far just a tad better than 90 grain nosler BT. We then backed up a ways ;) got the leica out and called 532 to the 10" gong. Using the reticle on the conquest I just missed with the first and then shaded a bit higher and started to hammer on that alloy. 8)

Pretty settled that this will be my big and little wolf bullet.
