Twist for .20 BR?

I am looking into the .20 BR for a long range varmint gun and was curious about the twist needed to stabilize the Berger 50 gr. bullet. If it can shoot them so much faster than the other 20 cals. does it need a 1 in 9? also has anyone shot critters with this bullet? I am not a fan of match bullets for varmints but there are some designs that open up well, so I thought I would ask.
Thanx

Yes it does need a 1-9" twist even at 20 BR speeds. I have read that others are getting away with slightly fast twist rates like the 1-10". But if you want to be sure and you really want to use that bullet I would get a 1-9". You can still shoot the 40s with the 1-9" as well. Although some folks have had the Sierra 39 gr. BK come apart at BR speeds in a 1-9". But mine shoots the 39s really well and they always have reached the target. They are very explosive bullets. I haven't shot the Berger 50s at critters, only targets so far.

Thanx Fierball,
Out of curiosity, what is your setup for .20BR and what barrel length do you suggest? I want zap critters mostly. I may doa few egg shoots or groundhog shoots as well. What would you say is the max range of the .20BR against targets with a pulse.
Thanx again,
Old

I would say it is a 500 yard cartridge. I shot around 550 rounds out of mine this summer. Most shots were between 250 and 400 yards. It was like a laserbeam even in the wind. I was amazed at how little I needed to compensate for wind and distance. My rifle has a 25" barrel but anything around 24 would be perfect. Getting 4000 FPS with a 40 gr. bullet, and 3800 FPS with the 50s is really easy with the .20 BR. Very mild at those velocities in my gun.
