Twist choice....

I'm in the planning stages of building a .257 caliber bolt gun. I would like to use 75-90gr bullets for plinking and small game in either a necked down 6.8 SPC or a 6.5 Grendel case. If anyone has any experience with either of these I'd appreciate your help.

you are in the neighborhood of a 250 Savage.

I would pick the 6.5 Grendl case option, just based on brass alone.

CJ6, I was thinking of the Grendel also for the same reason.

7tcu, I was looking at the 12 twist because I don't plan to shoot anything heavier then a 90gr bullet. In fact I have 1000 87gr bullets a few hundred 75gr bullets. But the inexpensive 12 twist barrels are a little scarce. I don't want to invest a lot of money in a project that's not for competition.

AckleymanII, in what way am I in the neighborhood of the 250 Savage?

Howdy !

I DK what rim diameter you might prefer, for your wildcat ?

A .220 Swift pretty much has same base diam as as PPC-based wildcat would have, and
.225 Winchester has about same base diam as that of 6.8 SPC. Both .308 bolt face compatible.

6.5 Ariska brass runs a little larger in base diam, than that of a PPC, and shoud be workable w/ a
.308 bolt face.

FWIW -
It appears to me that .220 Swift brass could be run up-into a shortened 6.5 Arisaka FL die,
to arrive @ a formed wildcat case w/ a base-to-shoulder dimension shorter than what a 6.5 Grendel has.... yet a tad shorter than the base-to-shoulder dimension a 6.8 SPC has. Shoulder angle of the die would greatly aid in simplifying case initial forming. YOu could always fire-form to a sharper angle, if your wildcat shoulder is cut that way.

Cases would be cut-off and trimmed to final case oal desired, and necks inside neck reamed to final .25" calibre you desire.

Just a thought.

357Mag, that sounds like a lot of work to end up with a grendel case or 6.8SPC case!! I have several hundred of both cases on hand, I was asking for opinions of the rate of twist to use with 75gr or 87gr bullets. I'm currently shooting a 25-45 Sharps (AR) which has a 1:10 twist barrel that does okay in the limited 223 Rem case. I like the Grendel case over the 6.8 SPC, I think it can withstand higher pressures [not that I'm going to load this cartridge to the max], give longer case life and easier to neck down rather then forming brass that's not readily available. I've been told that a 1:12 twist barrel will stabalize up to a 90gr bullet very well but if all I can find is a 1:10 twist then I guess I'll experiment sometime down the road with heavier bullets.

This is what I enjoy about this site, while investigating plan B, I found the barrel and twist I desire for plan A. Hopefully it won't take a year to gather all the pieces.
