TV worth watching...

There was actually something on worth watching last night. Josh Gates hosts a show called Expedition Unknown. Last night he had a 90 minute documentary about the Lions of Tsavo. Y'all may have seen the movie "The Ghost and the Darkness" a few years ago. Those are the names the natives called the Lions. 135 victims. He went to Africa, and walked the railway. Also found the alleged cave where the Lions took their prey. It was actually Hyenas who occupied the cave and drug the remains there. He also got to the Museum in Chicago where the Lion's skulls and hides reside. The museum had full body mounts made and they are on display. Great show.

You are referring to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. One of the world's great museums.

Which season and episode?

I read the book also that the Ghost and the Darkness was based on. Great Book. But the movie is one of my favorites. Micheal Douglas plays Remington and hits an acting "Home Run" with it.

"Oh my word...!".

I thought Kilmer stole the movie.

Gates often goes looking for places & things that may be unfindable. But, he is never stupid or ego central.
I really hope the show re-airs so I can record it. My High School Class went to Chicago, and our chaperones took us to the Museum. We also got to tour the U-Boat they had. Can't remember if it was in the same facility.

I had to look for a while to find the "Lions" and the taxidermy was terrible. The posing job was not great either. I asked about the elephant tusks they have, over 200 pounds each, that are not on display and they said they probably never would be!!

The lions of Tsavo have an interesting story: Arab slavers built a path that went way into the back lands where they would capture or buy Africans and then drive them back single file to the coast for shipping out.
On the brutal march back to the coast the slavers would cast aside any shackled slackers to die alone on the side of the path and be used as a visual motivator for the other captees to keep marching. So the lions in that area started eating the slackers, probably as carrion first and then when still alive. Over time, and 100's of generations, the lions in this area evolved to see humans as the easiest food source to catch in their world. And you know the rest of the story!

I saw this movie when it came out. Didn't remember details about it but because of this thread I've been reading about the two possible sibling lions that were maneless males.........fascinating stuff.
