Turret maxed at 100 yards

Hey all

Got a savage model 11 in .308. Came stock with Nikon scope. Threw a vortex viper on it in mrad 4-16x50 with the stock rail and vortex rings.

At 100 yards my elevation turret is completely maxed out and it’s still shooting a few inches low. Vortex replaced the scope the first time and the second is doing the same exact thing. Had a gunsmith look at it and they saw the same issue. The grouping seems good on the shots just low and bad

Anyone ever have something like this? Was thinking a 20moa rail on it to try to counter it but that shouldn’t be for only 100yards

Fix the barrel alignment issue. You will otherwise be sceptical of that rifle and never happy. It may be as simple as talking to Savage to see if they will accept a warranty claim.

You might try removing the rail to be sure it is sitting on your action correctly. No burrs holding it off the action and measure both ends of the rail to be sure it does not have a rake.

Is the front rail screw short enough or is it bottoming out on the barrel threads?
Is the rail backwards?
Is there something holding the rail off of the action?

Try a different rail. Make sure you aren’t bottoming the front screws out on the barrel threads, trust me on that one.

is this a 4-16x50 PST? If it is that scope should have 21mils of elevation. Thats an incredible amount of elevation.

I had a similar issue when I replaced a Nikon with a Vortex Diamondback. On my rifle The new scope was 11.5 MOA to the left.

I lapped the Vortex Pro rings and shimmed the scope into position and bedded the scope. Now I like the bedding method over others but the Burris rings and inserts are a lot easier.

Another culprit could be that the recoil lug is ground a bit off. I have several rifles with the Burris Z rings to correct side to side and vertical, the worst being a 700 Remington. I started buying 20 moa rails for the last few guns, right off the bat.

From personal experience, you REALLY need to consider those 20 MOA rails for your rifle. Sometimes like it or not, the factory has messed up drilling the scope rail holes atop the receiver that throws your scope out of wack because the angles are wrong. I have run into that in a blue moon and rather than having the holes re-drilled, I bought EGW rails and the problem was solved for 100 - 200 yd target shooting. Now I also ran into a situation that the clicks on some scopes, are HALF MOA of what other scope clicks are (i.e. Mueller Scopes) Same cure....more MOA on the scope rail to compensate for the shorter click movement. Just my thoughts.

Check your rail if you have (example 10 moa rail) check if it is on backwards
or could be same with rings example same something to check
