Turning necks?

How many of you guys turn your cartridge necks on new brass? I have been trying to improve my group size but have not turned any cartridge necks even though I am resizing from .22 to .20 and from 6mm to .22.

I have three calibers that I turn case necks on new brass. But they are tight neck chambers. Are you checking your neck diameters on loaded rounds? You want to make sure that they do not become to big after necking down the brass.

I neck turn to clean up the necks on all of my brass that I'm planning on shooting from the bench

The only reason I turn necks is to fit the chamber, if they fit without turning it's more of a problem if you turn them .......

PREACHER, WITH ALL DUE RESPECTS, I THINK YOU MAY NOT BE COMPLETELY RIGHT ON THAT WHEN IT COMES TO THE REALLY THICK NECKS OF THE WSM AND WSSM CASES. I HAVE TESTED THE .243 WSSM WITH UNTURNED AND TURNED NECKS ON WIN BRASS,APP. .0015 TURNED OFF) AND GROUPS IN MY RIFLE ARE TIGHTER WITH THE TURNED BRASS. ALSO, THE NECK THICKNESS IS MORE CONSISTANT ON EACH INDIVIDUAL PC. OF BRASS AND FROM ONE PC. TO ANOTHER. JUST MY OBSERVATIONS AND NO ARGUEMENTS INTENDED. BILL

Never gave it a thought about arguing with you Bill..
I was referring to 6br brass and if they are turned with out it being needed they cause more problems with tension if they are no turn barrels...
I turn for 90% of my rifles and know they help out a lot with accuracy improvements, but don't figure it's needed for factory chambers, or no turn chambers...... thats why I mentioned it will cause a problem....

I am amazed by the number of people trying to apply tight neck benchrest techniques to virtually every brand and style of rifle. They even have people wanting to turn their necks on 6.8SPC AR-15's before their rifle has even arrived. Impatient I guess and chomping at the bit to 'improve' something.

I see nothing wrong with experimenting with standard chambered bolt action rifles for longe range work. I've tried to remove just the high side, setting the turning tool to remove 40% to 60% of the necks circumfurence with little noticeable improvement in groups. It made me feel good to try it I guess. What happens is you usually make an acceptable tolearance for clearance worse, and that's what I think Preacher is talking about.

If you try this only mess with twenty cases, so if it doesn't work out you haven't turned ALL of your brass. Make sure you keep them seperate, don't mix them up with the unturned brass. That will make for unpredictable neck tensions.
