Turning 6mm Necks

What diameter should I turn a 6mm/243 neck for the best neck thickness and tension.

I'm ordering a set of reamers for a 6AI and I plan to make the neck reamer to cut .002 larger than my turned neck.

I don't think there is any particular neck wall thickness that is better than any other.

I'd get a large supply of the brass you intend to use and then turn the necks to whatever thickness will clean up any uneveness. It could be anywhere from no-turn to a few thou, depending on the quality of the brass. Then order the reamer accordingly.

For my 244 Ackley I turn my necks to .270 to fit my .272 chamber using WW Super brass. But if I had it to do over I would probably not turn the necks as much and/or I'd look at other brass to see if there is any out there of high enough quality to go with a no-turn.

Outside neck turning is becoming obsolete, even in point blank BR. It's a throw back to the days when quality brass was hard to find. Neck turning doesn't enhance accuracy, it's uniform neck walls that does that. Whether that uniformity comes naturally or from neck turning doesn't really matter.

It goes through me when I see people talk about what dia to turn a neck to.

I'm a little slow, but I need to measure neck thickness, and then know what dia bullet will be used. This will give the dia of a loaded round. Dia of an empty means nothing to me!

Maybe they mean loaded dia, but some times its hard to tell when they measure the case.

And bullets can measure quite a bit different form one to the next type,or brand)

I think that the majority of Benchrest matches are won with turned necks because the vast majority of shooters turn necks. The same reason that the overwhelming majority of BR matches are won by the 6PPC. And most matches are won by shooters using V V powders and Federal primers.

You'll also notice that some of our best shooters are getting away from the .262 neck, and very little neck expansion, and are using much larger diameter necks and more than the traditional .001 to .002 clearance. Fifteen years ago such a thing would have brought giggles from the majority of competitors.

Gene Beggs' no-turn necks immediately come to mind for good shooters who have had success without the extra labor. And, of course, we are seeing more and more LR shooters going that route with the excellant LAPUA brass.

But, winning those trophies trumps everything. If Louie keeps winning, shooters will do whatever he does.:)

In general, when BR shooters discuss neck diameters they are referring to cases with the appropriate bullet seated to the appropriate depth. You can arrive at the same number by measuring bullet diameter and neck wall thickness but not too many guys do that anymore. It's seldom that you'll hear a shooter talk about his cases having a .0135" neck wall thickness but he'll tell you that his cartridges measure .2700". Same thing.

I appreciate all of your thoughts. I'm of course interested in neck tension but I'm also interested in a tight neck so the necks don't work harden to quick. In my 6mm varmint rifle I didn't get exceptional accuracy until I turned and annealed every few reloads. Since I enjoy the brass prep and it gives me confidence I'll turn. I had been encouraged to turn to .268 but, before I posted this subject, I was thinking about turning to .270 that was confirmed in these replies. Now I'll be waiting until my barrel work is completed........... If anyone wants a career with a guaranteed full load of work every day they should become gunsmiths ;-})
