Tuning procedures?

I am going to be picking up a Harrells tuner for my 40x and was wondering what tuning procedures are out there. I am going to try the PRX first and was wondering what other ways there was of doing it.

Also looking for experiences on what has worked for who.

Thanks

ADJUSTING YOUR TUNER

1. Set you tuner to "0" and fire two shots.
Turn tuner one complete revolution (25 clicks) and fire two shots, continue this until you reach "100".
You now have a 10 shot group, all shot at the same POA.
2. Repeat step one from "100" to "200"
3. Repeat Step one from "200" to "300".
4. Repeat Step one from "300" to "400"
5. Repeat Step one from "400" to "500".

You now have five 10-shot groups. One of the 10-shot groups will show the smallest vertical stringing.
You should have used only 50 rounds so far.
Let's say that you find that the "200" to "300" group shows the least vertical stringing.
6. Starting at "200", shoot 2 five shot groups. Shift to a different POA for each group.
7. Repeat at "225", "250", "275" and "300"
8. One of these settings will show a decrease in group size.
Example: "250" showed the smallest group.
9. Now, start at "245" and shoot a five shot group at 245, 247, 249, 251, 253 and 255.
You will locate the "sweet" spot of your rifle barrel.
10. If you have any doubts, start over at Step #6, and redo the testing.

This is also known as "The Hopewell Method"

Do yourself a favor and do Purdy first. The above print is, I believe, Hopewell and I tried that first blowing through more than a brick in total. With Hopewell, there is no reference to barrel length and remember, your tuner will be coming with three different weights. Look at the combinations of weights to use for each routine.

It's been awhile since I bought my Harrell tuner, but if I remember correctly the weights didn't come with it. They cost extra, and my rifle didn't need them.

The Purdy Prescription is well documented and testimonialed to death by big names in the game on both Rimfire Accuracy and Rimfire Central.

Hoot-

Other than the number of syllables therein, I am not a big name in shooting.

Lesloan- You are right. I think the weights are about $20 more or less. I got them because, until shooting, one really doesn't know Purdy works and didn't want to be short the weights if they were to be needed.

I bought a set of Riverside weights for mine from Killough. No good reason for that brand other than my Harrell is silver finish and so are the Riverside weights. No good reason for choosing a silver tuner instead of black other than my barrel is SS. In hindsight, I would have gotten black if I had known how hard it would be to read the markings on the silver version. You learn...

I put a Mike Ezell tuner on my 1907 and WOW what a difference in accuracy. I tuned to the 9th harmonic and it now shoots Eley Match and Lapua Center X equally as accurate.
Heres a picture of my 1907 in a Stith bench stock.

Beautiful rifle, Rick....and thank you--Mike Ezell

You're welcome Mike, Thank you for going out of your way for me. Your tuner is the best investment iv'e made this year. I won my first local match with it.
