CZ455, 22 lr, factory fluted varmint 21in barrel. Boyd s pro-varmint stock, rifle basix trigger. Shoots federal premium gold match in the mid to high .3's to mid .4's at 50 yds. Have never even seen a tuner no less shot with one. Any advice as to what to try, will it do me any good, any advise? Make, model, weights? (Please don't tell me to sell it and buy an Anschultz) not an option. I do not compete, just want to be able to smile at my buddy's once a month. Shoot 50 yds, bipods, squeeze bag.
Thanks Bill

Bill,

There is no doubt in my mind that a tuner will help out a 22 lr. Mine is currently wearing a Harrell's tuner and after a short trial and error session I have it shooting better than I can read the wind. There's a article out there called "The Purdy Formula" (spelling?) that explains how to calculate the barrel vibrations (nodes) based on its length and how to include a tuner when calculating over all length. I never would have believed what a tuner could and would do until I installed and shot through one.

The Purdy formula is based on the length of a column of air and the speed that sound travels through it. You'll have to decide for yourself, it's merits, when factors such as the bullet traveling down the bore is constantly changing the length of that column of air as well as compressing the air in it.

Tuners are very prevalent on competition rimfire because there is no way to tune the charge as can be done with reloading. Without a tuner you can try different ammo but that's expensive (match 22 ammo is pricey) and time consuming, not to mention a change of ammo lots or weather conditions can throw all that trial and error out the window. Definitely get one if you want better accuracy!

I have heard more misinformation from tuner manufacturers than just about any other aspect of shooting (I was a structural dynamicist in a former life). Coincidentally, I called Mike Ezell yesterday, and got simple, quick answers to my questions without a hint of BS. Just pragmatic experience. He had product ready to ship as well. I can see why he was recommended.

Almost anyway...but I think it'll go out today. Gotta do my real job for a while. Thanks for the kind words Damon.--Mike

Mike Ezell's tuners are Cadillacs for sure. For someone that wants to try one out on their inexpensive rimfire and doesn't want to spend that kind of money to try a tuner LimbSaver makes a rubber donut that works by sliding it back and forth onto the barrel. Only $9 delivered on Amazon. Here's a link to an interesting post by someone who has successfully used that donut on their .17 Winchester Super Mag......

The idea that you can try out “a tuner” by using a rubber snubber makes an assumption that the snubber and a muzzle tuner are somewhat equivalent. They are not.

Of course they are not equivalent but the snubber will change barrel harmonics as does the tuner. It does it differently but does it nonetheless.

If it was as effective as a muzzle tuner, and cost so much less, every shooter in rimfire benchrest would be shooting one. But, instead, every one of them is using a beyond the muzzle tuner. Because they are fundamentally different. I was shooting rimfire benchrest when the tuner came on the scene. It changed everything. Well, almost everything.

Notice ezell is hush hush on this one. The $9 limbsaver rubber donut may render his tuners useless. Never sell another one once the word is out

I don't think serious competitors would use the rubber snubber even if they were paid to use it. First of all it's too ugly. Also it has no calibration marks so it could be moved inadvertently and not be aware of it. Regardless, it has merit as a low cost device to improve barrel harmonics for a rimfire, especially for plinking or varmints.

You can't precisely adjust the position of those rubber butt plugs on the barrel, yes they will influence harmonics for sure but they are neither finely adjustable or repeatable.

In practical terms a waste of money in my opinion. When you have used a proper tuner and realise how small and precise the adjustments are it makes the butt plug look like the joke that it is.

If you're going to play around with rubber things, I wouldn't just hang it on the barrel. Trying something like a rubber pressure point somewhere between the stock and barrel with an adjustable amount of pressure would make more sense. I'm not saying it would work, but it would at least make more sense. I'll stick with tuners.
