Tula and Wolf Primers the Same?

If you read the article in the bulletin the other day about the testing of .223 Federal, Wolf, Brown Bear, and Tula ammo (three of which are supposed to be the same) you'd see that Tula ammo isn't the same as Wolf or Brown Bear. This also makes me wonder about the primers, are they really the same?

If you buy a case, five 1,000 round boxes, they come in a box direct from the arsenal. The exterior boxes are exactly the same for the previous brand (PMC), Wolf and Tula. Apparently the only thing supplied by the selling company is the 100 pack sleeve and 1,000 pack box. The product numbers are identical and will be something like KVB-223M for small rifle primers. Too lazy to walk to the other end of the house to see what the numbers are for the others. Sleepygator most likely knows them by heart.

The color changes started when they were Wolf brand. Nickle, then bronze then copper and back and forth. I've never compared them directly as in load ten with this primer and ten with another and shoot them over the chronograph but they certainly seem to perform the same.

For large rifle I use the large rifle magnum. German Salazar says they're not all that much hotter than regular large rifle. I've never had a FTF or hang fire with PMC, Wolf or Tula and that's around 25,000 primers in eight years. Graf's had a closeout sale on PMC SRM's for $55/5000 and I couldn't pass it up.

If you see some PMC's in a green and white box (non-toxic) you might want to stay away from them. A fellow named Chris who used to be the guy at Grafs who knew his stuff told me he had tried them personally and they were terrible.
Very informative Dave, thanks.
Wayne.

:) Well, I do like those Russian primers. The ones that I use are: [br]
Large rifle - KVB-7
Large rifle magnum - KVB-7M
Small rifle magnum - KVB-5.56M
Large pistol - KVB-45 [br]
Dave has it right about the history and performance. His take is aligned with my experience. I also agree with Dave about the green box PMC. That was some kind of CF to make "green", environmentally friendly primers with "non-toxic" components.

The physical attributes, rings on the anvils and color of "plating", are often manufacturing "affects" so that the different products can be identified without having to send them to the "Lab".

For some time there were both Wolf and Tula in the supply chain so it wouldn't be unreasonable for the manufacturer to do this. Kind of like the little "B" that CCI puts on their Benchrest Primers.

Performance for me has been identical. Actually, I have experienced a greater number of FTF's with some BR-2's than with the Wolf. In both cases I was to blame, it appears I just screwed up more with the CCI primers.
