Tubbs lapping bullets

Has anyone used these? If so how was the results? Was it worth the time and money? Noticeableresults, gains in accuracy or velocity?

If you have a factory barrel that shoots 2 foot groups at 100yd firing an abrasive at high velocity down your barrel may help a little bit. I cant think of anybody that i know that would put them into a hand lapped custom barrel. If your barrel is that questionable its time to replace it- abrasives at high velocity wont help it. I cant think of an instance they could be used actually

I have used it on a weatherby vanguard barrel that was very, very bad. After considerable work, fire-lapping, and hand loading, it is an MOA rifle now. It was cheaper than a new barrel by a couple hundred bucks, but a lot of work. If it's just a hunting rifle, give it a shot.

Well it's a factory 5r barrel that shoots good I was just wondering if it could do any good for it. I'll probably just leave it be and be happy. Thank you all for the opinions

I know a guy that took a band new Krieger 1.450 heavy barrel and ruined it. It was a 10 twist in 300 WSM and he only fired a couple of fire lapp bullets through it. It opened up the barrel that he had to shoot at least two more grains of H4350 through it. Never did get good velocity and it never grouped good. I like Eddie Harrens post. Matt

That’s funny. I thought real hard about trying these on a Weatherby Vanguard that won’t shoot and copper fouls badly after only four or five shots.

In the end I just tossed it in the future project pile with plans to rebarrel someday.

I have used Tubb Final Finish on factory barrels like a 2 remington 700's I bought, 1 in 308 and the other in 30-06. Both were rough and you could feel tight and loose spots going down the barrel with a patch. I used 5 of each grade and when I was done, the barrels were noticeably smoother and they both shoot better.

I also am a believer in the Throat Maintenance System. I use them every 200 rounds. When I have logged my round count and see that it has been 200 rounds, then the next trip to the range these are the first 2 rounds fired on a cold clean barrel. I disagree with the instructions to do it after you have finished firing for the day. My idea is that if you are trying to polish the throat you want to do it before the barrel gets fouled for the range session.

I also use TMS on my hand lapped barrels 2 on the first range trip to start break in and then 1 each range trip till I can tell things are good with the barrel.

Yes maybe I have used up a little of my barrel but I have found that my barrels don't fall off a cliff at the end of barrel life. It is much more gradual.

To me these represent another tool in my tool box and like any tool ,if applied with some sense you can get good results.

In fact the ELR Current World Record Winning 375 diameter barrel had 2 separate TMS treatments in order to bring it into shooting bugholes.
Best advice I have for new barrel break in is to shoot about 1/2 dozen TMS bullets thru your new handlapped barrel with low velocity powder charge .

I had a Winchester barrel that fouled so bad that after ten shots it turned to a shotgun. I used Tubbs Fire Lapping system and it cured that. I then Flitzed the barrel till I got tired. lol.. Shoots 1 to 3/4 moa now.

i used them in a custom longslide 1911 done by clark custom guns. the barrel grooves were rough. so I bought the .45 kit. this pistol is in .460 Rowland and afterwards, the grooves were nice and smooth and also, I didn't run into pressure like I did prior to firelapping.

Well, DTubb stepped in. But I was also going to say that the TMS are great for break-in, factory or aftermarket.
This fire lapping system hurts nothing, just as responsible use of JB cleaning compound hurts nothing.
The naysayers here have very obviously never tested it.

There is no but the TMS system helps in breaking in a new barrel, no matter the brand. If you look at throat with scope after chambering and then after 6 TMS bullets you will see the brnefit.

They work very well. Used on a 300 Weatherby Magnum and the before and after was amazing. First the barrel had tight spots and rough spots and was a copper mine, copper filled after 3 shots. After the 50 shot treatment the barrel was smooth, one very slight tight spot and there was almost zero copper fouling. Accuracy was also improved. Don't let the nay sayers fool you, it does what Tubb says it will.
