Tubb Precision Speedlock Firing Pin Asmby. TOO SHORT- Rem 700

Edit ConversationMark as UnreadStar ConversationLeave Conversation
  1. Has anyone else experienced this issue with their Rem 700 BDL?

I purchased this upgrade for my 1976 Remington 700 BDL (not a J-Lock) in .30-06.

I'm a loyal and long time customer and advocate for Mr. Tubbs, after joining 6br and reading so much about him. Although I don't know him personally, have a great respect and admiration for him due to his competitive accomplishments, attention to detail and visionary ingenuity.
I'm a perfectionist and was drawn to what I perceived as a similar trait in him.
After reading the following quote from the product description, I was encouraged and assured there would be no problem with the upgrade:

("drop-in" replacement assembly is complete and ready for installation in any correct-length Remington action, J-Lock or not.)

After a long rainy winter and COVID-19 restrictions, one sunny day and 100 mile round trip to the range, I was unable to shoot due to zero primer strikes...not even a primer tap!

After replacing the firing pin assembly with the original, primer strikes were fine.
Measurements using my calipers showed a difference in length of (0.081") 81 hundredths of an inch from the bolt shroud face forward to the tip of the firing pin. That's 5/64" to 3/32" shorter than the stock factory assembly!!

No wonder the firing pin wasn't even coming CLOSE to the primer! That severely effects "LOCK-TIME".

I have contacted Hunter & Katie and am awaiting return call from Mr. Tubbs in hopes of working with him to correct this problem. Hunter eluded that others had reported the same issue and I am hopeful to find a remedy, so that all of us with the Rem 700 actions may continue to benefit from this technology.

Thanks for your input and reply,

    RMC

All I'll say is one of my rifles went from shooting little tiny knots to open chocked 12 gauge with the installation of a speed lock FP. I put the original back in, went right back to shooting small. This was in a Rem. 700 with a 6XC heavy varmint bbl. on it.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

It probably saved you from turning your rifle into a scatter gun .

Like the above posts say . If you search lightened firing pin , you would see all the problems and enlarged groups .
