Tubb comparator

Has anyone used the Tubb bullet comparator? Is it measuring bearing surface or base to ogive? By using this tool can you see a measurable difference in groups?
thanks Bob

While I have not used the "tubb" comparator, I have used one just like it purchased from gunsmith at 1000yd match. This comparator is two pieces so that you can measure base to ogive( using the bullet base only) and bearing surface on boat tails using both the bullet base and the indicator attachment that essentially negates the boat tail from the measurement. They are caliber specific. Good article on them here:

I found that the Hoover trimmer was actually several tools all in one, trimmer of course but also enabled base to ogive with caliper AND ogive to tip measurement with indicator. I used the Hoover just to sort bullets by both measurements, ( did not trim) and reduced my group size at 1000 by 1.5 to 2 inches. You can batch a box of 500 in short order. I still need to trim all the odd ball bullets and see how they group on paper after trimming. Anyway if you think you may get into bullet trimming, the Hoover also lets you measure, more bang for your buck! $125 complete trimmer.

Here is a good test for any comparator. :o Measure 50 bullets, and record the measurement data, mix them back up and set them aside. Next day measure them all again, record the data, mix them and set them aside. Repeat this process for three more days and compare the results. If the comparator passes this consistency test, then you have a good one! ;)

Chances are this is more a test of the "operator" than the comparator.
