I had posted this on the Varmint subforum.

However, I must admit I had initial doubts on the 17 cal 30gr bullet for our Ohio coyotes.

In my 24" 1:9 twist Deadshot 17 Fireball Barrel I am getting 3,450fps with IMR8208 XBR and 30gr Berger bullets.

You guys were right! What really surprised me is that we could NOT find the entrance hole. This #40 male coyote bleed profusely from his mouth indicative of a perfect broadside double lung shot.

Btw, this was my 1st coyote with a 17 caliber bullet. I have shot many coyotes with .224, 6mm, .308, 9mm, and 12ga.

It's not about who's happy it's about doing right thing. Why run around and cripple game ......
that's what a 17 f.b. will do if you don't know its limits. The guy made a solid body hit and no blood, just think what it be like on a bad hit on a runner, you not going to find enough blood to track it down and finish the job, just not. 17's have their place if you go about it the right way..
Who are you to decide what's right and what's not? You have no idea what AP2020 skills are do you.
Who made you god?

its called experience son experience. All I shoot is coyotes and Red fox and done it for over 25 years with 17 cal. I know what works and what don't so relax.. Skills do you no good if cartridge not up to the job. get it??

I've killed 300 Ohio coyotes with the 17 Hornet, not one got away.
Just today I whacked one at 100 yards with a Ruger 77/22 integrally suppressed rifle with a Winchester 42 max subsonic hollow point. DRT, just above his left eye,I was a little off as the lighting was poor. The 17 cals are fantastic and most will drop yotes if not all out to 250 yards, pictures of today's yote shortly, that's a beauty keep it up.

Not to get into the drama of ethics here but
I dont think any of us here shoot animals with malicious intent to torture animals
even if we take a chance shot to try to cripple it first intending to follow up with tracking it down and finishing it off.
it is sad to "witness" an animals suffering sure
but, none of us do so for that end result.
And I believe that is still better than poisoning them to try to control populations. which the Govt does
how much of a tortuous death is poisoning than crippling first?
---
I would like , not to get religious on anybody, but remind people
when Jesus cast out Legion into the herd of pigs
this shows, that animals do not hold the same value as people
that one man has more worth than even 2000 pigs who went straight to their death.
Animals are not people
---
Ones own ethics, if not illegal, are his own choice

Not good to discuss ethics on a hunting forum, the bottom line living things die, not fathomable for many people. Poisoning with getter guns is instant, but it hasn't decreased the coyote population to any great degree. Bible verses, while great, are not something that needs interjection on a hunting forum; they're forums for that, and I love the Bible, so don't think otherwise. One can't control the world, they're unethical hunters and ethical ones. Choose which one you are and move on.

Ok thanks.

17 cal.s do crazy things with right bullets.. What's your kill numbers of verses run offs??
IIRC, out of a couple hundred, a few runners the jack russell had to take down. If you can find Berger 25gr target bullets, they would probably be good for pelts. I ran out mid hunt and the PH asked me if I switched something. He could tell by the damage.

I agree, I don't like to preach but
Sometimes I feel it's good to "reground" people and show that
we should not Anthropomorphosize animals.
That starts allowing a creeping in of "Bunny Hugger" type mentality
Even God doesn't do that.
Who is one man to try and regulate another when the only real unethical thing that is against "Law"
is Depriving another HUMAN.....of Life, Liberty or Property
if there is no law against doing something that makes one man happy, leave it alone.
---If I like revving my engine or playing my stereo loud and the neighbor complains
again, tough, I live outside city limits, and there is no law to regulate it there.
---If I like shooting every Ferrel kitty cat that walks across my property, tough.
Someone can't do anything about it just because they love cats right?
---
Too many "Karens" in the world, and there should not be ANY on a gun forum
So I may try to reground people from time to time when i see it by using a solid foundation we all know

^^^^ This
And I also agree, it is not good to bring up ethical kills, how its done, the method used, etc
on a hunting or gun forum, which is why I said what i said.
Leave feelings and emotion out of it
Make decisions based on facts and reason
---
Here is what I find funny (FACT)
if a person was in a heated immediate self defense situation, most would not take the time to line up the shot for an ethical kill even on a Human
They would just start shooting and empty their mag, and that is accepted. Regardless of shot placement
Even the military mostly uses ammo strictly to shoot to wound.
Then someone cries about how one man shoots at an animal
