tru oil finish

hi guys!

im just finishing a new project and have decided to tru oil the laminated shehane stock insted of doing a 2 pack clear coat.

ive put about 5 coats of tru oil on and have started using 0000 steel wool between coats. id like to try and get a high gloss finish as possible and am wondering what/how to achieve that with oil or wax?? there are instructions on the bottle about using steel wool and a wax after but they are very vague and im looking for first hand experience.

any help would be greatly appreciated :D

After you have the desired build up with the pores filled etc & a level finish, you use a rubbing compound or rottenstone to polish the finish, then follow with a wax. I think that you "might" need a few more coats. It's real important to make sure that you're finish is level & thick enough to stand polishing. There is probably a video on midwayusa about "finishing the finish"

yeah i think you might be rite. ive taken off all the "furry" bits with 0000 steel wool but there are still slightly open poers in the timber. i wasnt shure if the oil would fill the poers or if i had to sand them out. i just keep layering the oil without sanding and then buff and wax it later i guess.

If you get some wet or dry sandpaper and wet sand your stock with tru oil it will use the sanding "dust" to fill all the pores MUCH faster that just adding coats. After the pores are filled, then continue with hand rubbing to get the build up before using polish. You can get a glass smooth shiny finish this way.

DO NOT use wax until you are finished with tu oil coats as it will cause a problem.

AusFclass,
I have done many different wood stocks with tru oil, I even did my entire loading room with birdseye pine and a tru oil finnish with excellent results. You can make it from a semi gloss to a high shean but I would think it would be difficult to get a good job with a plywood stock as it is many layers of wood all glued together, the wood of course will take the oil but the glue won't, I am very interested in your. outcome as tru oil is by far my favorite finish, could you please post some pics of your final product and let us know what you think. I have a beautiful Bill Shehane plywood stock I have been wondering what to do with as far as finish and hadn't even thought of tru oil, best of luck to you.
