Trouble with 140 grain Hybrids too much vertical..

I have tyring to tune my 6.5x284 (.297 neck) for the new Berger 140 grain Hybrids..they look good at 100 yrds but..at 400-1000 the vertical is crazy..I was shooting the VLDs with good success, not much vertical...thought I would give the Hybrids a try...I must be doing something wrong..I am just kissing the lands over 52 grains of H4831sc...(.294 neck bushing in Redding die)
Any input would be appreciated...

Thanks
Eddie in Texas

Back them up. Those bullets like to be jumped. I was lucky enough to be picked as one of the testers while that bullet was a prototype. It like fast twists and you will see them come into their own with .020+ jump, and kissing the lands is dangerous territory. PM me if you would like some additional information.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

What brass are you using? I'm using Lapua and a .291 bushing for a .293 loaded shell using Berger 130 VLDs. I also have a .297 neck. If I used a .294 bushing, I'd have negative zero neck tension.

I actually jam mine 15 thou. Hybrids are designed to be seating depth insensitive. So if you gun likes jammed VLD's (mine did) then try jamming the hybrids as well. Also I found jumping them to be good if I loaded a little more powder to get them shooting the same velocity. But jamming just seemed to get the ES and SD down and the gun really hammers the X ring. Possibly a bit more neck tension and the jump load might have shot as well as the jam.

In my 6.4x47 with 140 hybrids I jump them .015

They shoot well at .030 and .045 but .015 is the best

In shoots fantastic with the least amount of vertical I have ever seen

The 140 Hybrid is a fantastic bullet.

I'd check your loading methods. That's not to be directed as a negative.
And

Are you shooting with really bad mirage?

Your using a great powder and cartridge.

Try sliding your front rest and rear bag farther apart that can sometimes cure vertical. Vertical usually means you need more pressure, either more neck tension or usually more powder. I shoot the 140 hybrids at 1000yds and mine like to be jammed no vertical issues at all. every barrel will be different whether the hybrids like to be jumped or jammed, you have to see what yours likes. ::)

I second what BY1983 says. Sometimes you need to jam the Hybrids to get the ES down. I use various calibre Hybrids and half of them needed to be jammed to get the ES down for long range.

I found the ogive lengths to vary a bit and may have been related to occasional vertical flyers. I sorted all of them and shot a 200-9x with very minimal vertical. Also, I have them 15thou off.
