Trouble at the range, today

Five of us old guys arrived at the range this morning to find an older gentleman, in his mid eighties, already there shooting out at 500. Shortly there was a break in the action. The older fellow asked if he could drive down range and pull his target. “Sure, we’ve got time” we answered. He turned on the blinking red safety lights, got into his truck and drove out to that backstop. The five of us stood around talking. We waited and waited some more. ……….What the heck is that guy doing?…………We waited some more………Dang he’s taking forever! …………..Sure hope he gets back soon, we wanna do more shootin’. I look toward his truck and notice some movement…………..he’s walking toward us, almost back to the 400 backstop. …………..one of us got in a truck and drove out and picked him up and started to return. We figured that he had vehicle trouble…………..He sure did. …………unbeknownst to us, his dog had been in his truck cab all the time…………….when he got out to pull his target, the dog stepped on the armrest and locked him out!……………..Fortunately, we were there. Our range is rather isolated and off the beaten path. He’d have been in a fix and stranded if he had been alone………….Things worked out for all involved……….Lesson learned……….keep your key in your pocket………..LOL

Another example of why I fell in love w the 4th car "gotta haves".
1) Cruise control
2) Automatic Emergency Braking
3) Interactive cruise control
AND.....tadaaaaa #4
KEY FOB STAAAAAYS IN POCKET therefore push button start. NEVER locked out or lost key when shopping, eating etc

Thats better than the guy who left his dog in a rv at a boat ramp while he was launching his boat. Doggy stepped on the shifter and knocked it out of park, the rv turned into a submarine.
I have been there locking keys in vehicles, both personal vehicles and a customer vehicle as a mechanic. If i leave keys in the vehicle, such as in a shop or in my garage the window gets rolled down, 40 below and warming the car up? Window cracked, it will be warm enough with a window 3 inches down

I too was hoping the old guy was going to be ok.

I had a similar experience while out hunting. After 4 hours of unsuccessful tromping in the woods I returned to my truck only to find the keys in the cab locked in… I broke out one of the slider windows and it shattered into a million pieces, I was still finding glass 3years later when I cleaned it out to sell it.

I have learned that when possible, take out the windshield. Sounds crazy, but the windscreen in any vehicle is the cheapest and most easily replaced. Depends on conditions obviously.
If you drive a common vehicle (pickup in the last 15 years) call ahead to the local auto salvage before you take out the back or side window.
Works best if your phone isn't locked in the car and you can call the glass shop or auto salvage in advance!

I use the keypad on my F-250 all the time.
When I have the dog with me, I'm able to leave it running with the AC on for her while I run into a store or something.
Otherwise, in cooler weather, I can start the truck, lock it, run inside to finish things up and come outside to a warm truck.

I also lock my keys in the truck at the range. Punch the code and I'm in.
