tripod for spotting scope

I'm upgrading my tripod to something of higher quality to use for my spotting scope and possible to shoot from (with adapter in the field). What do you all recommend? I know I want a pan head and have heard great things about manfrotto's.

You can have the best scope in the world on top of a wobbly tripod, and you have nothing. You would be better served spending the most on a tripod.

Now, if you can find a used surveyor's tripod with adjustable legs, you can adapt a Manfroto head to it, and have a very stable tripod for a lot less money than buying a top grade photo tripod.

I have a Kowa TSN82, and I have used several stands . I have the Champions choice stand but I got too much sway with the heavy scope. Next I bought Jarheads stand , great but did not suit my purpose. Finally I bought a Bogen movie camera stand and put the Manfroto "grabhand top". I t has been up to the task for everything and everywhere I have set it. 45/70SS

My big PF-100 ED Pentax sets on the Fancier FT-717 without a problem...
Stability is as good as it gets, and you sure can't beat the price..........

thanks guys, that fancier setup seams great for the money might just pull the trigger on that one, the tripod combo is a nice heavy tripod which is what I want, can always put the head on a lighter weight sitting height tripod for field use if I ever draw that elk tag i want.
