Trimmer for Ackley Imrpoved Cartridges

I am in the market for a case trimmer, and the Wilson/Sinclair unit sounds good. However, the case holders are available only for standard cases - no ackley improved cases,i.e, .280 AI/338 RUM AI). As such, I assume I need a trimmer that uses trimmer pilots. Any recommendations ?

I'm positive that Wilson makes case holders for a number of improved calibers/wildcats/unique chamberings...my loading bench has 22-250AI & 243AI case holders

A .243, 260/08,.308 ackley is formed from a standard case of each caliber, use the shell holder made for them. Don't worry about the improved part of the case. You are holding the case at the base and that part of it doesn't change when you form the improved neck /shoulder junction. If it's a 260 ackley use a 6.5 pilot,.243 use a 6mm pilot,.308 use a 30 cal. pilot. All the afor mentioned cases uses the same shell holder.

Depopulator:

I have a Wilson case trimmer, in fact three of 'em, and they make a specific holder for the .223 AI. Can't remember for sure, but think I ordered mine through MidwayUSA. I'm not aware of any other case it will fit.

Some of the Wilson case holders will fit all cases of the same family, like .243/.308/.260, etc. But not so with the .223 AI.

If you already have a Wilson fired case holder for the trimmer in the stock .223 Rem, I would try it before I bought any other holder. This is one of the things with a Wilson/Sinclair trimmer, I would not get my tit in a ringer over. Yes Wilson does sell the holders for the AI stuff and if you need them then you will be good to go. Try the other first if you have it.

Putting a .223 AI case into a standard Wilson .223 Remington case holder is about the same as putting a "tit in a ringer". Try if you must, but order an AI case holder, it's the only one that works.

You are clearly talking about a tool that you have never seen, much less never used.

The Wilson trimmer holds the case by the body, NOT by the rim or base of the case, and it must be a tight fit to the body, or it won't work.

Only cases with similar bodies can use the same holder ie, .222, .223, .222 Mag... .243, 260, 7mm-08, 308, etc.

.
You're correct! I've never used a wilson trimmer nor do I plan on it. I don't see any need to buy a trimmer that I have to pay 6or 7 dollars for each case holder, when a regular case trimmer will do just as good a job and be a lot faster at it to boot. I'd rather spend more time shooting than trimming brass and I do a lot of it.
