Trigger "fall" question

I bought a used Timney trigger and installed it on a Remington 700. I can't remember which model, except it was a "700 trigger". I noticed that when I closed the bolt, the firing pin would "fall" slightly. Not that I could figure out how to measure it but it sounded wrong. The gun fired OK but it bothered me enough that I switched it out with a Jewel and threw the Timney in a drawer. Thinking I should learn about this, I figured I should ask a dumb question. How do I "fix" it? Thanks, Josh

I have measured a couple of Timney's and found the top sear sets about .030" forward of the factory 700 trigger, what your probably feeling is the firing pin falling onto the trigger during the "hand off"

Thanks Gary. I have only used Jewells and had never encountered this issue before. I can assume that it's not a problem? Thanks, Josh

I've seen it on more than one, they seem to work, my guess is they are trying to alleviate the re cock which is common on the factory 700 actions, pic shows a Timney on right, 700 trigger on left

Ya, Timney triggers can sacrifice a lot of pin fall. A lot of factory 700s will only end up in the low .200s for fall and thats asking for reliability and accuracy issues.

.300-310" is excessive, .240-260" is more the desired realm.

Timney 510 triggers originally were designed with ~.045-.050" shorter sear bar to reduce cock on close. This created problems for many with fail to fire issues. Surgeon asked for a standard length sear bar that was dubbed the "U" sear. In the beginning if you had fail to fire issues Timney would give or install a U sear for you. After some time they started charging for them. After more time and far too many fail to fire issues they went to the U sear as standard. As far as I know all 510's now come with the longer sear bar, AKA the "U" sear providing a pin fall closer to what Remington designed. If you have a short sear bar and want more pin fall, call them and I'm sure they'd be happy to sell you a U sear.

According to Otteson, the factory firing pin travel on an empty chamber is .275". .213" at primer impact.
