Trigger Discrepancies

While I've changed a number of triggers, I don't understand all of the differences. An old Timney works well on my new PTG Lonestar 40X clone. Looking for a lighter pull I tried a Shilen which fits and functions but the bolt closing required an unreasonable high force. I read about similar situations where some trigger brands don't function well in some Rem clones. Why is this? How does one know what to buy?

More than likely it’s the difference in the sear on the trigger. On the shilen you probably get getting some cock on close and compressing the firing pin spring
Is this referred to as timing? Is there a way a novice can adjust?

An old Timney
Timney for quite some time made triggers with sears that effectively shortened pin fall by .050”. They did it to give a nice smooth bolt close. What it really did was cause a ton of failure to fire issues because of too little pin fall. Surgeon actions with these triggers were the worst. It was so bad that Timney offered a “long” sear for a Surgeon. Anybody that knew any better would request the long sear to start with for any Remington or Remington clone. There were other issues with the earlier Timney’s that could be fixed but after awhile there were better options. Timney finally saw the light and quit chasing the short sear, easy bolt close thing. If this is what is going on I’d learn to live with the harder bolt close of the Shilen.

The Shilen is unreasonably hard to close, totally upsets the rifle. Timney works fine, just looking for a few oz less pull.

It may be a cocking piece/sear height binding issue with the Shilen. BnA on several triggers offers three different sear heights to work with various actions. You might head over to Bullet Central’s website and take a look at the chart. Measure your cocking piece height and see where it stands. They have videos showing and explaining how to do it.

What is the pin fall with the Timney and Shilen?

I'll check out the videos. Thx
