TRIED MAKING 6BRs OUT OF 22-250s TODAY

Tried making 6BR brass from 22-250's today .....no go.

The brass is .025+/- thick in the new shoulder area and folds into about a dozen creases. The shoulder moved ok without collapsing but unusable with the creases.

Since the folds develop in the shoulder, I doubt it would improve doing it in neck steps.

I used a cut off seater die for my first attempt because it has a .255 neck....result, neck and shoulder creases.

Tried my wildcat 6x47L .100 short FL bushing die next as an intermediate step. The unsupported shoulder collapsed.

Finally tried a 22-250 FL die with a plug to push it further into the die rather than cutting off the die....same result, shoulder and neck creases.

So it appears my near 1000 22-250s and 6XCs are destined to remain as is. Maybe ultimately make a showing in the For Sale Forum.PXL_20250711_235049250.jpg

You might try stepping down in smaller increments. Just a thought. Maybe .010 at a time. You might be surprised. Good luck and keep us posted.

Just neck the 22/250 cases up to 6mm. Fun cartridge. Got one myself that I'm playing with between matches and testing my serious comp gun.
Yes the 6mm International could be a use for the brass but it's very close to my current 6x47L .100 Short LRBR cartridge ...and just too much gun for my current PDn MO.

Was this for fun or do you really just need some new br brass?
Both...trying to find a use for 1000 22-250 and 6XC brass and curious if I could make 22 BRs out of them. The ultimate goal was to make 22 Tall Dogs.

Maybe if I opened the die up to 30 caliber and made it into a bushing die to step down from it might work.

THe .025 brass thickness in the new shoulder and neck seems to be the problem.

I was hoping this might be one stroke on the press in a Dillon cut off die like making 20 VTs out of 223s....nope.

I've seen some really small and short cases but this one has me stymied.

Don't forget that the backend of a 22 250 (.200 line) is smaller than the 308/BR,, so even if you did get the cases formed with your dies, the case would swell at the case, head and loosen the primer pockets prematurely..... Roger

Trim to length / shoot, Fire form / creases should go away. Just my 2c

Thanks for all the comments.

This was a low budget attempt to convert the brass.

It may be feasible stepping it down from 30 or more caliber but I doubt I can overcome the .025 thick brass while the moving shoulder so far.

I'll anneal the neck area of the die I cut off and ream/bore it just to see see if it's possible.

I doubt it based on the results so far. But now curiosity has the best of me.

It doesn't look like you annealed first. That could make a big difference.
Sometimes it does the opposite and makes it easier for the case to fold.
I do a minimum of 1000 cases per year for my cats. No annealing, baby
steps, follower mandrels, and don't spare the lube on the walls. Also, do
not try to push the shoulder back. Each smaller push to narrow the case
wall should be done so you are actually forming a new shoulder. Fire
forming will finish it for you. Most buckling problems are caused trying
to push the old shoulder......22 Nosler I'm playing with. First push was to
where I want the shoulder to be. Second push stops short of the first and
third will stop short of that. Been doing it for so many years now that I can
dang near make a perfect 35 degree shoulder !! Baby steps.

Long time ago I farted around making this beauty.

I don't recall exactly what dies I used, but started with a fired 30-06 case and my 7BR form die, which initially pushed the should back to BR length. Then I used several more does to get it eventually to 22 caliber. This was way before Remington offered factory 7BR brass & you had to use the full length 308 BR brass to form to shoot in the new X-P-100's in 7 BR.
