Tremor3 reticle for prairie dog-sized targets?

So, I the past I had made fun of the Tremor 3 reticle because there is a LOT going on.

Then I learned the Gun MPH system and coincidentally, a knowledgable person or two explained the reticle to me. Horus has a free interactive demo that helped too.

The reticle isn’t great for small calibers like a 204 because…well, in short the dots don’t calculate out well with low BC bullets.

Anyhow, I was thinking of using this reticle with my 6BR, which does work well with it. My concern is the wind dots (esp the big ones) will obscure pdogs out past 400yds. I was hoping to go out to 700yds+, but with mirage that may mostly be a fantasy except for cool mornings.

Anyone use this reticle in the field with pdog-sized targets and care to share your experiences?

I am a huge fan of Christmas tree reticles. That said, the Tremor3 wouldn't suit my shooting. So my input will probably not help you.

I am a high hit percentage shooter. When distances increase, I can't maintain shooting that I want. My max shots will depend somewhat on conditions, but are rarely past 350 yards. I range every dog I shoot, because I never hold on the center of the dog. I am always adjusting my hold for the distance and wind, so my bullet strike will be centered in the chest.

I don't dial for elevation, since I don't need to. For the typical wind I shoot in (10 mph crosswind) and a 200 yard shot, I know I need to hold 3 MOA into the wind. All my centerfires use the same scope. Vortex Viper HSLR FFP 6-24 with XLR reticle. It provides me with exactly what I need for my shooting. But the distances and holds will be significantly different for what you are looking to do.

Yeah, I do what you do…all holdovers for elevation and wind holds. I use a Vortex EBR-2C or limited edition 2D, both in mrads. Like you, I have good success. My 204 starts to peter out at 450yds, but the holds work fine.

The thing I’ve heard from the mil guys is that with the wind dots in the Tremor3, one doesn’t have to consult a dope card for wind calls. This is a big time saver and would allow more hits before the buggers jump in their holes.

The short version is you take your G1 BC number (pretend it’s 0.456), take the first number and that’s your Gun MPH number.

With this 4mph gun, look at the Tremor 3 wind dots. Each dot is 4mph of wind.

In action: if there’s a pdog at 350yds, you look at your dope for elevation. Say it’s 2mrads. Then, pretend you estimate a 10mph full-value (90°) wind from left to right. For a 4mph gun, that would be two and a half wind dots (see below for the hold).

Below is the reticle. The lines/hash marks are in 0.2 mrads each, and the dots are the wind holds. It’s the big dots that have me a little worried. (Above the main horizontal there’s ranging stuff and numbers for helping you hit movers, but ignore that)

Of course you have to factor in aerodynamic jump for your elevation as this reticle doesn’t help you there (but I guess there’s a Tubb reticle that does).

Horus, the manufacturer of the Tremor, charges a crapton for their reticles so the cheapest scope I can find that has it is ~$1700. A fair bit of coin for a gamble.

Here’s their reticle simulator: https://www.horusvision.com/reticle-simulator/

Anyway, I’m sure there’s a way to figure this out with math…like first look at the reticle subtension chart to see how many mrads are the big dots, then figure out how many mrads (or MOA) is a pdog at 400 yds.

Just hoping someone has done this before. I’m lazy lol.

Ok, so I’m attempting to figure this out with math.

I was (helpfully) told 0.1mrad at 400yds is 1.4".

Looking at a subtension chart for the T3 reticle, Horus unhelpfully doesn’t list the dot sizes, either small or large. Sigh.

But, it looks like the big dots are about 0.2 mrads in diameter.

If so, the big dots cover ~2.8” st 400yds. I think.

If this is true, then at 800yds, the big dots cover ~5.6”. And I think at 600yds they then must cover ~4.2”.

So I think my answer is: out to 500-ish yards the T3 big dots won’t cover too much of a pdog. But around 600yds and out, it’s going to be an increasing problem.

Please check my math lol
