Nightforce reticle for p-dog/groundhog

I have read a lot of posts here about Nightforce, but I am still wondering about reticle choice. It is going on my new 6x45 AR, so range will be limited to about 500 yards. Main targets will be prairie dogs and groundhogs from the bench or bipod. I intend to go with the 8-32BR model because I don't need the durability or side focus of the NXS.

Since this reticle does not have much in the way of subtending lines for aiming points at different distances, do you use click adjustments for elevation?

That's the thing I like about this reticle,,, no distractions.
And yes, clicking elevation and good ole Kentucky windage.

My son is thinking of a 8-32 NXS for long range varminting. Since he doesn't have a rangefinder (yet), he was thinking of the NP-1RR reticle. Other than being a little busy is there anything wrong with this one?

Long range anything demands a good range finder first.

The RR reticle is calibrated on 22X for "average" size targets of opportunity. For prairie dogs, it's no big deal. Shoot, adjust, shoot again, repeat. For about anything else, it's one and done.

Reticle preference is subjective. My last one is a NP-R2 reticle on a 6.5-284 medium range plinker. I use a DD for competition, but prefer the holdover points of the R2's for another option, without being over busy.

Long range, without precision, is wasting ammo. I think a good rangefinder has to come first.

I too have been looking at the NF scope, But I'm very concerned or confused about the short eye relief of 2.9,,Is that on highest power at 32 if so what would the relief be ,,say at 14 power ??

gunsmoke;
I have used nightforces on rifles from 6DASHER up to the 338 Snipe-Tac with no problem with eye-relief. In the 338 I was loading 143.22gr of US869 behind a 265gr bullet so this was like a shoulder fired howitzer. Still, no problem with being touched by the scope.

If your son wants to rangefind with it i'd go with the NP-R1 reticle. It's cald. for 22x in that optic and at 32x the subtension between lines will be right around .7 inch per hundred yds. If he can guess the tgt. size very close he will have a very good chance of getting the range close enough to ~400-500 yds. (sometimes even further) for 1st-shot connections.

For PD's, definitely a NPR1...quick and calibrated follow-up shots are necessary.

Man, you double-dot people...I just don't get it :D ;D

I looked at the NP-R1 reticle, but I don't think that it is available in the BR models. Does the NXS offer anything additionally other than side focus? For my applications, I couldn't find something to justify the additional expense.

That's why I said the R2.

The BR 8-32 only has 50 MOA of adjustment, which for your 500 and under, is fine, but.....

I would consider keeping your eyes open for a used NXS 5.5-22, which would keep you not much more in price point over a new BR. It has twice the movement and comes in the R1 reticle.

My brother and I both have the 8-32 NXS with the R2 reticle.
It is an awesome set up for varmints. We both shoot ground squirrels and with the lines there is no clicking. If you are low add a line and smoke him.
I have killed several thousand with my 6br using the 75 gr. VMAX. It is an incredible set up. When the poor little rodents get scared and just poke their head out of the hole crank it up to 32 and do some brain surgery.

I prefer the NP-R1 or NP-R2. The R1 has windage marks every 2 MOA & the R2 every 5 MOA. In shooting 2.5 inch clays at 400 & 500 yards the 5 MOA is a bit coarse. I have it on the 12-42x BR model.
