Treechuck

I've seen this a few times also and was amazed by it. But it was too risky to take the shot, no backstop for the shot.

Blow downs are another favorite place for hog boys to climb to survey the area for threats. In one field I use to hunt a hog would climb up on the concrete pedestal of power line tower to check things out before dropping down into the alfalfa.

I shot one off the top of a Roll Bale of hay from the barn loft with my Marlin 39D lever gun while watching for Coyotes. Just over 50 yds and with a Winchester Expediter round; I’m not sure who was more surprised.

Woof!

Never seen that, but a friend from NM came up to shoot Rockchucks one Spring. He saw one atop a telephone pole. I am not sure what the heck he was doing up there, but my friend drilled him with a 40X 6mm Remington.
If I ever saw one here in a tree, I would be so surprised I would just take his/her picture and walk away.

Thanks for the photo...

One day in my early teen years I heard our farm dogs barking treed along the creek several hundred yards from the house. I grabbed my Remington 41 single shot and headed that way. A groundhog had climbed a sycamore leaning over the creek to escape the dogs. A Winchester Super-X LRHP ended the commotion.
Twenty years later I saw a groundhog 4 or 5 feet up a small sapling along the edge of my Dad’s soybeans. A Super-X 22 Magnum from a Ruger Single Six took care of the bean eater.

First time I ever knew they climbed trees was about 45 years ago. Shooting at an old farm where the home had been empty for years but the land was rented out and farmed. I looked over at my friend and saw him aiming into a big tree about 50-60 yards away. He fires, something bigger than a squirrel falls to the ground from pretty high up. I said what was that? Woodchuck he says. I said no way. I thought it was odd a raccoon would be out in the middle of the day. He says, go look. Well, sure enough! Woodchuck.

Since then I've seen several.

A little OT but, ever see a Fox climb a tree? Double take so I looked it up. Momma Fox showing her Pups how to climb a tree. VERY INTERESTING!! :):)

"Gray and red foxes. Foxes are not generally considered to be tree climbers, but gray and red foxes are known to climb trees. Gray foxes are commonly referred to as the “tree fox” and are one of only two canids that perform this behavior. Climbing trees helps these foxes to repel predators and find food and provides them a way to rest on trees. Foxes can also climb down with their tails first".

We've got them all around. Hear them barking at night looking for mates and food. Have seen standoffs between my Cats and Foxes.
Face to face, maybe 5' apart hissing at each other. Any food left in the bowl over night is fair game for anything passing thru.
Think the foxes and cats have reached a mutual agreement. You don't mess with me and I won't mess with you. ;)

One big downed tree out back with a maybe an 12" to 14" limb. Fox poop on it and one spot in the field where a fox poops on a regular basis. I refer to them as a "Squat and drop it". Garbage can next to the compost bin. Fox poop on the can lid and quite often, pee and poop in the outside dishes. Territory markings?? One spot in the driveway where there's always poop. Just passing thru.
