Tree rat zero check

I like to sit out on the front porch and watch for coyotes and hogs. Every few days when the action slows down I like to do a zero check. Sometimes I'll catch an old tree rat out of his "safe zone".

The tree line happens to be about 40 yards out where some old bird houses are awaiting repair.

Sometimes it's too easy.

The 30 grain "Texas" Gold HPBT in the 17 REM at 40 yards is hard on them.

Just shot a limb rat in the back yard. It's either baby squirrel season here or something. They are everywhere and chasing each other. Hawks are too fat to fly. There was at least 8 running around while I was trying to pack my vehicle for UBR match tomorrow. My shot nailed one and the rest left in a hurry. Happens every year.

I was doing this with blackbirds least evening. Got to thinking that 17 rem is an expensive air rifle. But watching them explode @ 200 is worth every penny.

Those tiny bullets are so much fun. That squirrel was in the typical stance much like a prairie dog. To watch him flip over in the scope is like it's a camera. My load isn't all that hot with 26.0 grains of W760 and a Rem 7 1/2 primer in R-P brass.

Tonight I shot a small red pig with the 17 Rem at about 150 yards. I was at 8X and saw him take two wobbly hops and into a patch of woods where the rest of the sounder ran. I decided to check in the morning. I didn't want to walk into some woods with possible wounded pigs and three rounds in my pea-shooter at dark thirty. If the coyotes don't drag him off he should be there in the morning.
