Transporting railgun

Sorry if this is an intrusion on this subforum I wanted some eyes on this and didn’t know where to start. I’m moving from Alaska to the south east continental US and I have an unlimited class railgun to get there in one piece. There is a thread on Benchrest central and the two answers were cumbersome aluminum box (a possibility) or roll in blankets and lay on pillows (good answers for motor vehicle travel) but I will either take as checked baggage or use air cargo of Alaska Airlines.

I believe it arrived to me from Jay in well cushioned boxes and I guess I could do that too. Just didn’t want to take it all apart if there was a simple solution. I was about to build a wooden crate and thought it was worth asking first.

Not much else you can do, but build a create and pack really well
I would pack the top in a separate box

if it's the 'Jay' I think it is seek his advice. if it is movers, a box with strong foam padding is good. squeeze it tight.. Shipping box needs to be very tight to prevent slippage if to is dropped on end. box in a box works well. assuming the boxes are cardboard, a small chunk of 3/8ths plywood just inside the inner box ends provides the strength to prevent slippage if drooped on end. Always take the bolt out (unlock it) . if the rifle is assembled, make sure the action screws are tight. I prefer disassembling including removing the trigger.

Ok thanks to you both. I was thinking about drilling some holes where the three feet are and tapping them in if I am going to have to use the wooden crate method. Securing the top to the base might invent some type of Velcro strap or four grabbing it in every direction. I think I might call the man who birthed her too if it seems to sketchy. I was wondering about packing the crate with bubble wrap or foam for the up and down? We have all sat in a plane and looked out while they load luggage and holy jumping jamborees they are rough. Thats my biggest concern

What is the fully assembled weight? 100-150#'s. Build a crate, solidly bolt the unit in the crate so nothing can move no matter how it is held, set, or dropped. It will then be heavy enough to ship by freight. If you remove the action it will no longer be a firearm and eliminate any special handling.

Ah. So if the receiver is attached it will be priced and handled differently? So are you say leave it in place so they will take precautions or remove so I can avoid any unnecessary costs?

It needs to be packaged the same to prevent damage. With the reciever it is a firearm. Without it is just a crate of machine parts
