Toughest Range To Shoot

I forgot about Peacemaker range, I ran out of windage with my NF scope and still couldn't get on, had to hold the next up wind target ....... it was the one and only time there between it and other issues...... jim

Of the ranges I have shot, Rawlins WY was the toughest, if not for e-targets I doubt it could be used. Raton the second day of 2019 F-Class Nationals humbled me. I had only one 7 and felt like I escaped with my dignity intact. I won't comment on all the 8's and 9's, but did somehow get one X. Ben Avery and Colorado Rifle Club have also whipped my a$$ a few times.

Camp Hanson Okinawa. The freak'n wind flags at the 200 would be a totally different direction from the 300 and the 300 different from 500.

Camp Butner in NC is very challenging. AIM rifle club in Blakely GA is a beast too if wind is bad

Last year our 1,000 yard bench rest range in Scotland, we were competing with 22 moa windage, gusting +6-8moa, and +6 moa elevation.
Its not the first, and won't be the last...

Red Castle Tulsa.

Another vote for Red Castle 1000 yd. near Tulsa. Very challenging particularly in the spring when fronts are moving through from the SW. No flags for the 1st 400 yds. approx. (land falls off too steeply) doesn't help matters.

Evidence to support Trentham, New Zealand:
The 2015 TR World champion, Ben Emms lost 6 points of a possible 675 at Camp Perry.
The 2019 TR World champion, Steve Negus lost 47 points of a possible 750 at Trentham.

Given the number and quality of shooters at a World championship, it speaks volumes.

i went back and checked ,,,there was 13 scores of 500 or more all year and the best score shot was Jr Rigsby shot a 507 in a 100/300 agg 260/247 which was better than all 100/200 aggs all year in any class ,, and I think the best score shot in Dry Branchs 2 year history,,

Well,
there are days when you walk to the line and say " if I can keep it in the black today, I'll win' and other days when the line is : if I can keep it on paper, I'll win"
Trentham gets my vote. Fastest and most voluminous changes I've ever seen.

I know this topic is and will be purely subjective to your area, but what range gives you fits and hands your butt to you on a Silver platter?

I'll start off...

Pinetree Rifle Club in Johnstown NY is a BEAST at 200. Quite simply just a bear to compete in due to the prevalent mirage. Kicks my ass every single time. When you shoot there, don't expect a free ride.

The second most difficult range to shoot at, in my opinion would be Lincoln County Rifle Club in Damariscotta Maine. It's a real widow maker...

So...let's hear the horror stories about that great day that went south with no explanation. No rhyme or reason...just couldn't get a handle on it.

I have not had the opportunity to compete at the ranges in the South, but would like to hear about the "real killers".

I shoot at HTC in south Florida the king of mirage the five hundred yd range is in a ditch. Facing east if you get there right when they open you get maybe an hour before you can not see the targets for the mirage. 90 degrees 100 % humidity some days you can see the moisture steaming off the ground. I have learned that dial the magnifaction way back gives you a chance. And if there is any kind of breeze it moves clouds over you can watch till a shadow passes and use it to get your shots in.

and just being straight up, our home range in Pascagoula is pretty tuff. never a match where the flags all go the same way, mirage is INSANE(90% humidity and 90 temps), and no matter which way the flags are going they are going to be at full value. of course, this is coming from a guy that is TRYING to learn how to PROPERLY shoot in the wind.

Not untypical winds at the Rattlesnake range. And some days you have 'rock days', where you need rocks to 'tie down' your mat. rifle cases, etc to keep them from blowing off the firing point.

There are special occurrences called the "Rattlesnake Clean" where all competitors miss the target.

I'll throw one in from Australia - Pinjar range in Perth. One of the windiest cities in the world, this range is world class with its facilities, but particularly unforgiving if you get it wrong. Wind and plenty of mirage to contend with, along with any number of brown snakes hiding in the bushes waiting to kill you.

I’ll second Pinjar! Although I haven’t shot on as many ranges as others here I cant imagine there could be much worse.. some days I think been bitten by a Brown at Pinjar would be a step up from conditions and scores!!

They all can get wild from time to time. Rattlesnake has had a year plus run of good luck. We’ve shot in mostly mild conditions.

That said, I’ve also been there when we had to stop shooting because the 2x4 uprights on the target carriers were snapping off.

Raton at the 2019 FCNC was quite an experience. My time shooting at Rattlesnake helped a lot.

I have a Rattlesnake Mountain cap, does that count ?

The absolute easiest range I ever shot was the now defunct Rachel’s Glenn in Alabama, the one that the late Mickey Coleman ran. It was 200 yards only, The conditions were as steady as any place I ever shot.
