Tough Rock Chuck -giggity

Got in some quality rock chucking this weekend. In the scope this looked like the biggest Bull marmot I’ve seen in a while. It was only what I call “close” for marmots at 225yds away. Most shots range 4-700yds after the first shot is fired. I brought along a 308 that I never seem to shoot. I was shooting 125gr TNTs at 3206 muzzle velocity.
This big bull was tough. Hit it with one shot mid-guts at 225yds and that would normally cut a marmot if half. Not this gut, he got back up and managed to drag itself 20 feet! Picture doesn’t do its size justice since it’s empty of guts. The side showing is the entrance side. Not much left of the other.
This species is tougher than a guy thinks. My preferred caliber is 25/06AI or a fast 6mm with 87-90gr bullets. I also brought my 6XC shooting 105 VLDs and while accurate, it won’t launch them in the air like the faster more fragile bullets do. Beautiful country to shoot in. I won’t say where it was since the place is overrun with out of staters these days. Us locals can’t hardly enjoy the place anymore.

Definitely liking that, what state I need to hook up with a guide and do that, despite plenty in my home state, great scenery.

Now that is what I call a great day. To me, out for rockchucks is about as good as it gets.

No shooting involved this time, but the other day I stalked to about 30 yards near my house and 'shot' this guy with my Nikon and a 300mm lens.

Any day I see a rockchuck is a good day. And it's even a better day if I have a rifle with me. :)
