tooling help

I have my lathe and ordered tooling from gretan, but now I would like to know what cutters I need for barrelling. I will be doing mostly rem 700.

What do you use for the counter bore, Threading inside and out and facing. Any part numbers and place to get them will be great. I was looking in a catalog and there is a lot to choose from.

thanks
chris

Most smiths single point almost everything. For instance, you can use a counterbore tool of .705" for any 700 bolt, but you will leave quite a bit of excess play between the counterbore and the boltnose. If you single point the counterbore, you can cut it to any diameter you wish. I like .001"-.002" clearance. Some use HSS and others carbide.

I would like to use carbide insert tools because that is what i have used at school and work. I have the small gunsmith lathe from grizzly and am not sure what size cutters for the locking lugs in the action. What cutters to use for inside and outside threading. Like i said i looked through the catalog and am confussed.
thanks

I am confused as well. I just got my new lathe and used milling machine. It my dream to have a shop. I have a wood shop, welding shop but am just starting my gun shop, I need help. I am confused and have read many lathe and milling books, but to no avail. I need someone to point out exactly the tooling needed to start along with the accessories.
I have several catalogs including Grizzly and Enco. Which tooling and accessories to buy and not waist money seems out of reach to me when looking at all the stuff.
Needing help,

Getting a lathe and mill are just the beginning. You never have ALL the tooling I've been buying tooling and making my own for over 26 years and still you never have just what you need.

The help that you have given is great but still has not answered my question.
What tooling do you use for the inside and outside threading.

And what size tool for the the locking lugs and the bolt nose recess in the barrel.

Where do you buy yours at and maybe manufacture of the tools. And type of inserts if you use carbide.

thanks
chris

Brownells has most of what you need and the rest can be made with your machines, and a little elbow grease..
The newest threader's are inserts that can be changed when they wear out and work very well, but Brownells do not carry those. Check out the MSC catalog for those.

Just a couple of thoughts from beginner to beginner.
Take one of the NRA Summer School Gunsmith classes. They are associated with a couple of established GS Schools around the country. I've attended Lassen Community College's in Northern California and can't recommend it highly enough. http://www.lassengunsmithing.com/
In one machine shop class there were students from New England and Florida. The classes are inexpensive and good enought to justify the flight to Reno, NV and rental car.

There I trued and rebarreled a Rem 700 using HSS bits I had ground. HSS will give better cuts at gunsmith levels. Carbide is for production on $20,000 machines.

The school has LaBounty and Manson fixtures but I used a couple of student built fixtures. The level of instruction there will enable you to make them.

Hinnants' book on barrel fitting is great instruction. http://www.precisionshooting.com/books.html

Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck, Dee C.

As post #6 said, you'll never have all the tooling you need/want. At the beginning, figure on spending as much for tooling, including things like chucks) as you did for the lathe - for whatever price lathe you bought - the more expensive the lathe, the more expensive the tooling

Tooling is a greater expense than the lathe and Mill. Buy your tooling as you go along. Make most of your jigs and fixtures you will gain from the experience. I get some of my tooling from Thin Bit tooling, I get some from Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool and Gauge, MSC, Travelers, ENCO, and many others.

If your lathe is small and does not use flood coolant You would be wise to learn to cut your own tooling from HSS. Carbide is designed to use high speed and feed. It is very suseptable to chipping. HSS is more durable and cost much less.

I put item H5955 on the splash guard to hold tooling and it works very well to keep tools handy.

I use the endmill set more than you think one would with a lathe.
There are a few things on the list I didn't order for the lathe but may be useful.
You can look the parts up and see if you think it is something you'll need.
I hope this helps.

I have found the DVD's from Darrel Holland,AGI), Steve Acker,Google search) and Richard Franklin,Richard's Custom Rifles) to be very helpful.

I use HSS and like to grind my own tooling as the Hinnant book shows. Same for turning and all threading. I like the 3/8" blanks for my Heavy 10 South Bend lathes used on one of the Chinese QC Toolposts. Get the wedge type from SHARS, Grizzly or MSC, etc. The Dorian, Aloris, KDK are great, but for my work the Imports
are fine. Get a hand full of tool blocks - cheap & mighty handy when changing tooling

The Hinnant book is good, but the DVD's are easier to understand.

The NRA School I attended was great experience also.

Good luck.
