Tooling for Chambering

I've recently bought a lathe and am interested in ordering tooling to do some chambering. So the several hundred dollar question is who's tooling should a guy buy? Any input would be appreciated!

Look at the stuff here. They are great people to deal with and have great easy to use tooling. Good luck.

AR Warner +1, Enco, EBay, MSC, Craigslist. Quality DTI's on a Noga bases are nice. I use a combination of HSS bit I grind, idexable tooling and cemented carbide. Small/micro boring bars are handy to have. Stock up on quick change tool bit holders. Can never have too many. Be forewarned, the need for tooling/tools/gadgets never ends. :)

Thanks for the tips, I have some AR Warner tooling and really like it. Really interested in what chambering reamers, indicator rods, and bushings, also what kind of pilot on the reamer. Thanks.

Pablo, the best advise I can give you is to find a successful smith that you can take a class from. Expect to pay for it but it will save you lots of money in the long run. One way it will save you is by not having to buy unecessary tooling. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip Erik, the closest smith that will do what you suggest is about 1100 miles from where I live, the good guys that are closer don't teach classes. Having said all that I do have some machining experience and have watched smiths do this type of work in the past. The question I need answered is what brand and type of reamer, does a hobbyist need a flush system etc.

Thanks

I use a JGS reamer holder. You do not need a flush system.

Pacific Tool and Gauge makes a bunch of stuff. JGS and Henriksen also make top notch tooling as well.

+1 on the JGS and no flush system. You will need a .001 Indicator to rough in a barrel and a .0001 indicator for final adjustment.Get some good ones.

Also depending on the width of your headstock you might have to rig some spiders depending on what length barrels you want to work on.A spider on the back is a must.

I would take a class from Gordy Gritter. I think his number is 641 780 5085. Bullets com has his videos. The $500.00 you spend for the class will more recovered from tooling and mistakes. He chambers down the center of the Bore. With out doing that you cant Time or Clock the Barrel.

There are a few good how to videos on you tube, especially by "The Viper"
aka Mr.Pete.

A good read with lots of info can be had in the book "The Complete Illustrated Guide to Precision Rifle Barrel Fitting " by John Hinnant.
